The Equalizer 3 Ending: Does McCall die or retire? Who is Emma Collins?

The final scene of The Equalizer 3 leaves the audience with a curious impression of McCall and reveals a lot about his actions.  

The film begins with McCall, a former DIA agent, injured after destroying a Sicilian crime syndicate. He finds refuge in Altamonte, a coastal village where he bonds with the local community during his recovery. However, the villagers are harassed by The Camorra, a ruthless mafia group; when they escalate their aggression, McCall responds with his own brand of justice.

The film also features a secondary plot where McCall assists Emma Collins, a CIA operative, by providing her with data on illicit drugs that originated from the crime base he attacked. The investigation reveals that The Camorra are collaborating with terrorists, and McCall’s killing of Vincent’s brother, the leader of the mafia, triggers a final confrontation.

McCall eliminates Vincent and his associates in a brutal assault on their residence, Collins receives a promotion despite her injuries and McCall settles in the village.

The Equalizer 3 ends with McCall finding his place in the world, helping a CIA agent with a personal connection, and giving up his vigilante career. The film also reveals the motives behind his actions.

1. Did Robert McCall retire in the end?

Yes. In the end, Robert McCall gives up his black book to Collins, which indicates his retirement. He settles down in the village where he seems to finally be at peace. 

The Equalizer 3 explores the concept of destiny and how people find their place in the world. By the end of the film, McCall seems to have discovered his true home. The film portrays a more somber and ruthless version of the protagonist, who is haunted by the loss of his close friend Susan in the previous installment and the treachery of his former co-workers. McCall shows no mercy or compassion when he eliminates his enemies and prioritizes torture over death.

The village’s hospitality and warmth restore his sense of humanity. He returns to Altamonte after ending Vincent and joins the villagers in a festive occasion, smiling brightly.

He also passes on his black book to Collins, indicating his retirement from his vigilante activities. The Equalizer 3’s ending does not suggest any continuation of the franchise, and if this is the final chapter, it is a fitting farewell to the character.

2. What was there in McCall’s backpack?

The contents of the mysterious backpack that McCall retrieves from a crime lord in the beginning of the film remains a mystery till the end. The backpack contained $360,000, which McCall wanted to give to an elderly man whose retirement fund was hijacked.  

Before the fight in the opening scene of the film, McCall implies that he is there to retrieve something that they stole, and he leaves with the mysterious backpack. He only shows the contents of the backpack to Collins in the final scenes.

McCall reveals that the crime base was also involved in online fraud and that they hacked the retirement fund of an elderly man in Boston. He once drove this man in a Lyft (a reference to his previous occupation in The Equalizer 2) and he traveled to Italy with the sole purpose of returning the man’s $360,000.

Collins is perplexed by McCall’s extreme altruism for a stranger, but she understands his motivation when she delivers the bag and sees the happiness that the restored money brings to the man and his wife.

3. The Motive

The film lacks characterization for its villains, who are portrayed as excessively wicked. They commit heinous acts such as murdering an elderly man from a window and severing the hand of an underling. They extort money from many of the businesses in Altamonte, but Vincent has bigger ambitions for this idyllic place.

He intends to construct resorts and casinos for visitors, and that will require displacing the residents. McCall, who has received generosity from the people, firmly opposes this plan.

4. The Jihad Drug Subplot Explained

The film also has a significant subplot where Collins investigates the drug shipments that were concealed inside wine bottles at the estate McCall attacked.

The drug is an amphetamine called the “Jihad drug,” which is used by Syrian terrorists to finance their operations. It is revealed that The Camorra is purchasing the drug, and thereby supporting terrorism, which prompts McCall to contact the CIA. In the final scene, McCall makes Vincent swallow a lethal amount of these pills. He then accompanies the escaping Camorra leader to the village and watches him succumb to his overdose.

5. Is Emma Collins Susan Plummer’s daughter?

The film also maintains a suspenseful mystery about McCall’s motive for aiding an unknown CIA operative.

He and Collins develop a friendly relationship, but he never explains why he reached out to her. The final scene in Collins’ office, after she survives a car bomb set by the Camorra that almost killed her, resolves this mystery. She discovers that McCall has left her his black book with a note saying her mother would be proud.

Collins then glances at a graduation photo on her desk, showing that she is the daughter of McCall’s old friends Susan and Brian. By acting as a guide to Collins and giving her his small book of names and secrets, he is preparing her to become a brilliant agent like Susan was. It is another indication that McCall is ready to quit his equalizing activities and retire as well.

The Equalizer 3 is an American vigilante action film directed by Antoine Fuqua. It is the sequel to the 2018 film The Equalizer 2, which was based on the TV series of the same name. The film stars Denzel Washington and Dakota Fanning.

It follows retired U.S. Marine and former DIA officer Robert McCall. The film is the fifth collaboration between Washington and Fuqua, following Training Day (2001), The Equalizer (2014), The Magnificent Seven (2016), and The Equalizer 2 (2018).
