Alice was lonely and unhappy as a child, and Duke came like a messiah in her life. Eventually, she fell in love with him.
She returned to his life years later when Duke was at his lowest point and provided him a shoulder he can rely on. Gradually, Duke also started to love her.
Earlier in the episode, we also saw Duke’s younger brother, Walter, and got to know about how he feels about his brother being cursed.

Episode 9 Preview & Speculation
A lot happened in episode 8. The backstory of Duke and Alice was sad and emotional at the same time. Alice returned Duke’s favor years later when Duke was stuck in the dark.
Yet, it is still difficult to believe why Alice would dedicate her whole life to someone she cannot even touch, just because of that one moment in their childhood.
It seems like it has something to do with Alice’s mother. I hope they’ll explore more about Alice’s past in the upcoming episodes.
After a fun but heart-wrenching episode, Christmas will arrive in the next. As it is customary for families to get together during that time of the year, we can expect to finally see Duke’s mother.

Episode 8 Recap
Cuff learns writing alphabets from Duke and Rob, so she can impress Zain. She reveals that they both started working at the circus since no one can suspect their true identity there.
On the other hand, Duke’s younger brother, Walter, is annoyed that their mother wants Duke to take on the family title and still hopes that the curse will be cured. To add, Viola prefers Duke over him and calls him a second born son.
As a result, Walter develops a severe inferiority complex about being the second in line, but he still declares himself as soon-to-be head of the family.
Viola visits Duke and meets Cuff at the mansion. She immediately takes an interest in her due to her curvy physique.
After a few days, Alice and Duke enjoy the snowfall sitting by the window. Alice reminisces about the first time she came to the mansion. Duke was depressed about his curse and would lock himself in the darkroom for the entire day.
At first, he rejected Alice and decided to fire her. Even so, Alice refused to leave him because when she was alone and sick as a child, he was the one who had given her a hand. So, Duke challenged her to either clean his bedroom in three days or be fired.
Alice cleaned the messy room in a single night. In frustration, Duke ran away from the house while it was snowing heavily.
After almost dying in the cold, he finally recognized Alice and wished to meet her one last time, but couldn’t gather himself to even stand up.
Luckily, Alice found him and scolded him for trying to kill himself. She told him that there are people who would like to see him leading a happy life and took him back to the mansion. That was the day when Duke realized his love for Alice for the first time.
About The Duke of Death and His Maid
The Duke of Death and His Maid is a 2017 supernatural manga by Koharu Inoue. The manga was serialized on Shogakukan’s Sunday Webry website and finished its run in May 2022.
The story revolves around a young duke named Bocchan who was cursed by a witch in his childhood. His curse can kill anything he touches, making him completely isolated from his loved ones to save their lives. He lives in a mansion on his own but is accompanied by his maid and butler.
He has quite the relationship with his maid Alice and the two grow closer throughout the story.
