1. Episode 2 Preview & Speculation
In Episode 1, Duke revealed that a butler lives with them too. Alice didn’t outright say it yet, but it’s pretty clear she’s in love with the Duke, and that’s why she’s so dedicated to him. In the next episode, it’ll be revealed why butler lives in the mansion.
The curse definitely has something to do with Duke’s mother. There’s no way a five-year-old boy could provoke a witch so much that she had to put a horrible curse on him.
Considering Duke and Alice are childhood friends, I guess he did something when they were young, making Alice love him so much.
I wonder why she has a picture of him in her locket. Also, what did Alice learn in those two years that made her less scared?
Moreover, the literal translation of the Japanese title is ‘The Duke of Death and His BLACK MAID.’ I wonder if Alice also has something to do with the curse. However, it’s unclear and we hope to get all the answers in the next episode.

3. Episode 1 Recap
Duke writes a letter to his mother, reflecting on his past when he was cursed by a witch, that kills any living thing he touches.
Therefore, his mother sent him away to a mansion in the forest, where he currently lives. He yearns to see a glimpse of his family but couldn’t do so.
Duke lives in the mansion with his maid, Alice, who never misses a moment to come close to him, and a butler. Duke wonders why Alice isn’t afraid of dying as she is well aware of the curse.
One day while sitting in the swing of his garden, Duke recalls the witch’s words who put a curse on him when he was five.
While lost in thoughts, he accidentally touches the tree, which immediately dies and falls down. Such is the effect of the curse, he says.
The following day Alice takes breakfast for the young noble in his room and informs him that his friend Philip wishes to meet him. On hearing this news, Duke reveals that Phillip was the only one to see him differently after he was cursed.
That night, Phillip visits the mansion with his four guards, who prevent Duke from getting too close. They proceed to the dining table. While having dinner together, Duke accidentally touches a plant, causing it to die instantly.
On seeing this, an expression of fear appears over Phillip’s face. He excuses himself and asks Alice to show him the way to the washroom.
While walking, Phillip tries to convince Alice to leave Duke. However, Duke interrupts and asks Phillip not to disrespect Alice.
This draws them into an argument, and Phillip tells Duke that he came there only because his mom wanted to know how he is doing as his younger brother is going to inherit the family title soon. Phillip then leaves and swears to never visit again.
Duke is heartbroken, but Alice cheers him up and asks him to break the curse together. Duke swears to one day break his curse and repay all Alice’s kindness by confessing his love and asking her to marry him.
In a post-credit scene, Duke’s mother gets a report that the curse is still active, but Duke seems to be living a peaceful life.

The Duke of Death and His Maid is a 2017 supernatural manga by Koharu Inoue. The manga was serialized on Shogakukan’s Sunday Webry website and finished its run in May 2022.
The story revolves around a young duke named Bocchan who was cursed by a witch in his childhood. His curse can kill anything he touches, making him completely isolated from his loved ones to save their lives. He lives in a mansion on his own but is accompanied by his maid and butler.
He has quite the relationship with his maid Alice and the two grow closer throughout the story.
