Netflix’s political thrillers don’t disappoint – occasionally, they even transcend our expectations. The Diplomat belongs to the second category, and Keri Russell’s performance as the series protagonist only pushes it to the next level.
No, I’m not exaggerating. It has to be worth its hype because Netflix just renewed the show for a second season! The season 1 finale confidently set up the show for another season, possibly more, but it was up to Netflix to greenlight a new season. Since the show enjoyed weeks on the Top 10 list in over 85 countries, it was hard to believe they wouldn’t.
The streaming platform confirmed the news this Monday, and I’m here to discuss everything we know about the upcoming season of The Diplomat.
Considering the series was recently renewed for another instalment, we can only rely on speculation and theories regarding the release date, cast, and plot for season 2. Season 1 was announced in January 2022, and the series premiered on Netflix exactly 15 months after that.
So, if the show follows its previous release pattern, you can expect season 2 to land on Netflix sometime in the latter half of 2024. I’ll keep you posted once Netflix decides on an official release date.
Keri Russell is sure to return as Kate Wyler in the new season, but the rest is conjecture at this point. After Meritt’s car blew up in the season 1 finale, his and Hal, Stuart & Ronnie’s return is doubtful, but we can’t say anything for sure.

David Gyasi, Ali Ahn, Rory Kinnear, and Ato Essandoh, who are the main cast in the show alongside Keri and Rufus Sewell, have not confirmed their returns. Sewell stated he hopes his character returns in a Netflix Tudum interview along with the following statement:
All I know is that if you resolve it one way or another too quickly, we’re screwed. I like to think there are enough problems to last us [a few seasons]. Who knows? I would like someone with a better imagination than mine to take over on that rather than follow my dumb suggestions.
Kate’s season-long search for the perpetrator of the bombing near Iranian borders ended in the final moments of the season 1 finale, revealing it to be the British Prime Minister Nicole Trobridge (Rory Kinnear).
Before Kate and Austin could even comprehend this expose, a car bomb goes off, possibly killing Hal, Stuart, Ronnie, and Meritt.
