The final episode of The Diplomat season 1 reveals a lot of secrets that Ambassador Kate Wyler has to discover. She is involved in a political juxtaposition because of the attack on HMS Courageous and her husband Hal’s schemes to make her the vice president, even if she doesn’t want it.
The last scene of The Diplomat episode 8 shows why Kate didn’t know everything about the attack that put her in danger, while also raising some new questions.
Season 1 is not only about the attack on the British ship but also about Kate and Hal’s marriage. They help each other in their careers but also have many conflicts, especially when they disagree on how to handle major problems during the course of the season.
The finale explains everything that was still unclear and makes the viewers curious about a possible season 2. This is because some important questions about central characters are left hanging in the air.
Hal’s Speech at Chatham House
Hal has been a layered character throughout season 1, and everything he has done has had hidden motives besides the obvious ones.
Hal’s old friend Lewis Quainton even asks him if he is rejecting his offer because he wants to be the Secretary of State, and Hal’s coy smile in that scene suggests that he doesn’t disagree.
However, the goal of Hal’s speech at Chatham House was to fully back up Kate’s work. His speech is about talking to anyone, regardless of their position, to achieve peace.
That speech makes Kate look good when she eventually becomes the Vice President, and it also matches her actions as ambassador, since she talks to both Iran and Russia to delve deeper into the attack of HMs courageous.
Kate Wears a Read Dress, and it Marks the End of Her Marriage
Keri Russell’s Kate wants Hal to leave her alone in season 1. She is still angry and hurt by Hal’s actions in Afghanistan, which saved time but left 300 Afghans who worked with the U.S. behind.
That, and the high cost of most of Hal’s risky actions, makes Kate lose trust in Hal. But their joint success with the Russia plan convinces Kate to give Hal another chance and consider the VP idea without worrying about having to stay married.
Kate choosing the red dress for the gala shows that she has given up on her and Hal’s marriage and didn’t want to give him more chances.
While that doesn’t mean she will act on her unclear feelings for Austin Dennison, wearing something so different from what she usually wore is supposed to say that she is ready for a new beginning.
After all, even if she is wrong about what happened in this case, season 1 gives her many more reasons to not trust Hal.
The Diplomat’s Car Bombing Brings Kate & Hal Back to the Start
Kate’s choice about her marriage to Hal will probably change because of the car bomb in The Diplomat season 1 finale’s ending.
The last scene probably shows her security team getting her to safety and telling her about the bomb, and, if Hal’s life is at risk, the ambassador will likely want to take back her decision.
After all, their previous life-changing event made Hal look like a careless guy in her eyes, but the car bomb put Hal’s life in danger. Even if Kate is ready to leave him, she definitely is not ready to watch him die.
Trowbridge Explains Everything about The Attack
British PM Nicol Trowbridge being the mastermind of the attack is one of the most surprising things in The Diplomat season 1 finale, but his involvement is the only thing that could have made sense of the attack’s flaws.
After all, Kate and her team only find out that Iran was not behind the attack for sure and that Russia would have been fine with the real, usually Russian-linked culprit, being caught.
Since Trowbridge also has a reason to unite the country, needing the Tories to win the by-election so that the UK doesn’t lose Scotland, an attack seems like a good chance for that.
Kate clearly tells Austin why only the person who plans the attack would want Lenkov dead in the last scenes of The Diplomat season 1 finale.
Grove’s need to talk to Hal shows he probably knows the same information French interior minister Fournier gives to Kate, confirming Trowbridge as the bad guy behind both the car bomb and the attack on the British ship in The Diplomat season 1.
Chances of Season 2
The Diplomat season 2 has not been confirmed yet.
Netflix’s long-term deal with The Diplomat creator Debora Cahn might suggest renewal if The Diplomat season 1 does well. But it’s still unclear if there will be a season 2.
However, if The Diplomat season 2 happens, it should show if Stuart, Ronnie, and Hal lived through the car bomb.
They are far from the car, and they are important to the story, so it’s unlikely that The Diplomat season 1 kills them, but the last scene did show they were in danger.
Also, Kate and Austin will have to stop Trowbridge now that they know he was behind everything. If The Diplomat season 2 happens, it will surely be full of action and mystery.
