The Detective Is Already Dead Episode 1, titled “Attention Passengers: Is There A Detective on Board?” aired this week.

In episode 1, the dynamic duo made contact with each other. It was revealed that Siesta had planned to have this encounter with Kimi.

With Kimi’s help, Siesta solved two cases in this special premiere episode which was 46 minutes long. 

It took two exhilarating cases and Siesta’s assurance that he will be protected for Kimi to accept the job of being her sidekick.

The Detective Is Already Dead episode 2 is titled “I Still Remember, After All This Time.”

Episode 1 ended with the quite obvious revelation that Siesta has already died. We could gauge that from the title itself.

However, from the preview at the end of episode 1, we can deduce that Kimi comes across someone who reminds him of Siesta and should continue to do his detective work with her help. 

There is a strong possibility that the girl could be Siesta herself, but nothing can be said as of now since we have no context regarding her death. 

I hope that Siesta remains dead for the rest of the show while Kimi copes with her death and uses it as motivation to solve more cases.

3. Recap of Episode 1

Episode 1, titled “Attention Passengers: Is There A Detective on Board?” starts off with Kimi sitting on a flight when he hears an odd announcement. 

The announcement is the cabin crew requesting the presence of a detective. Kimi is surprised that they are not asking for a medic but rather a detective. 

Kimi expects no one to step forward. However, to his surprise, the girl sitting next to him steps forward, claiming to be a detective. 

Kimi is caught off-guard by this development and asks her name on an impulse. The girl just smiles at him and labels him her sidekick, and brings him along with her. She then reveals her name to be Siesta.

Upon reaching the scene, they realize that the flight is on the verge of being hijacked, and everyone’s lives are in danger. The culprit asks the detective to figure out why he hijacks the flight, and if she is correct, he will surrender himself. 

Through witty wordplay, Siesta manipulates the culprit to reveal his reasons himself.  She then proceeds to mention his history, which causes him to attack her with his android powers. 

While Siesta is distracting him, Kimi rushes to get his bag, which unknowingly had a weapon in it. Siesta uses this weapon to subdue him and then later gives him a chance to live a new life with a new identity. 

When all of this commotion is over, Kimi goes back home just to see Siesta waiting for him there. She reveals that she had orchestrated everything, and even their encounter was planned. 

Siesta is persistent in making Kimi her sidekick. Finally, to get him to join her, she offers to help him with a case in his school. 

Siesta solves the case before it could even begin. Therefore, what seems to be a supernatural story turns out to be a drug racket. 

Kimi then asks Siesta what he is to gain by joining her. Siesta knowing his history of having frequent encounters with unfortunate incidents, ensures his safety and puts her life on the line. 

This gesture of affection touches Kimi’s heart as he has not felt it before due to the lack of parental love. So he agrees to be her sidekick and go around the world solving cases.

The episode ends with Kimi mentioning how it is all for naught as the detective is already dead and he is just trying to fill a void.

Written by Nigojū and Umibōzu, The Detective Is Already Dead (Tantei wa Mō, Shindeiru) is a light novel series that follows Kimihiko Kimizuka, a third-year high school student and former assistant of a detective named Siesta.

He made Siesta’s acquaintance three years ago, 10,000 meters above the ground in a hijacked plane. The two went on one death-defying adventure after another for three years that eventually ended with Siesta’s untimely death.

In the present day, Kimihiko tries his best to reintegrate himself back into normal life.
