After giving us masterpieces like Your Name and Spirited Away, Masashi Ando made a comeback with The Deer King in 2021. The movie was a huge success and was featured in various film festivals like Annecy and Fantasia.
Knowing his previous movies, Ando makes sure that his new project is just as soul-shattering as his last works. This is the reason that the whole world is enthusiastically awaiting its premiere.
Masashi Ando’s The Deer King movie will make its US premiere in select theaters on July 15. GKIDS has released an English-subbed trailer for the announcement.
The film first debuted during the Annecy Film Festival in 2021 and made it to Japanese theaters in February 2022. Although, it had been a hot topic for discussion among otakus even before it hit the screens in Japan.
It depicts a beautiful foster father-daughter relationship amid a deadly pandemic of the Black Wolf Fever. The fever targets children, and only the ones chosen by it can survive the disease.
Moreover, the trailer shows a lot of misery and tragedy with the sick children and the main character’s adoptive daughter at the risk of being taken away from him. I must warn you all that this movie will make you cry.
GKIDS also announced that it would be hosting a fan preview event for the film with English subtitles on July 13 and an English-dubbed version on July 14. The tickets go on sale on June 10, and the fan event will also have a special introductory message from Masashi Ando.
I think the movie will be widely relatable for many as it shows a pandemic situation and the loss of loved ones because of it.
Not to relive the trauma, but anime films like these generally portray the narrative in a way that makes you cry about the tragedy poetically.
