The Creator of Dandadan Reveals His Favourite Characters!

The popular shounen manga Dandadan is getting a lot of spotlight lately, once due to the unfortunate leak and now due to the official release of the anime which has received much appreciation as expected. We hope this is the start of a growing fandom for this series, as it deserves all the love that’s coming its way.

In an interview, the creator of the series, Yukinobu Tatsu, revealed his favorite characters in the series, and surprisingly enough, Okarun wasn’t his No.1 character! In this article, we will reveal Yukinobu Tatsu’s favorite characters along with a few facts about them.

Yukinobu Tatsu’s Favorite Dandadan Characters

At a meeting with the popular publishing company Shueisha, Yukinobu Tatsu revealed his favorite characters in his manga Dandadan along with all the reasons for the same.

According to this interview, Yukinobu’s favorite character is Momo. He admitted that he had put a lot of emotion into creating her character and that he really wanted a cute girl in his manga. After Momo, Okarun, Aira, and Kinta Sakata come next in line as Yukinobu’s beloved characters.

Momo features as one of the main characters of the series. She is a headstrong and beautiful high school girl who believes in the existence of ghosts.

Besides all the feelings that the author put into Momo during her creation, he also likes her strong-willed personality as it strengthens her natural appeal in the series and sets her apart from Okarun, the male protagonist of the series.

Takakura Ken

Takakura Ken, who is also nicknamed Okarun by Momo, serves as the male protagonist of Dandadan. He is a socially awkward, frail-looking, and weak-willed boy with an obsession with UFOs. One can tell, even with just a glance, that Okarun and Momo are polar opposites. It is perhaps these differences that brought the two together.

Yukinobu has admitted that he likes Okarun for very different reasons. According to him, Okarun has a lot of potential. Potential that doesn’t just pertain to physical strength but his overall growth as a character. He may be lacking now, but he’s learning, and later, he’ll blossom.

Shiratori Aira

Aira serves as a major supporting character in Dandadan. She used to be a regular old popular girl in Okarun’s high school; however, after she discovered the existence of the supernatural, she developed something like chuunibyo (delusions of grandeur). She now thinks Momo is a demon, and she has a thing for Okarun.

The author has specified Aira to be one of his favorite characters because although she may look cold and unfriendly to everyone from a distance, the truth is that she is actually quite caring and considerate to the people she likes. The author likes that trope in females.

Sakata Kinta

Kinta came out to be one of the more surprising characters to be in the author’s favorite list, since he has relatively lesser importance considering other characters. Sakata Kinta is one of Okarun’s and Momo’s greatest allies when they face the paranormal, and although he is quite brash and condescending, it’s all just a facade.

One of the reasons why the author appreciates Kinta is because of his struggle. He wants to be someone important and capable, but he can’t accomplish that on his own. Yet, he improvises with what he has and makes the best out of it. According to Yukinobu, Kinta is a character anyone would want to root for.
