Gareth Edwards’ latest film, The Creator ends with a dramatic climax and a glimmer of hope for the artificial intelligence (AI) population. The film follows the journey of Alphie and Joshua as they attempt to destroy the US military’s Nomad, a powerful AI weapon.
However, they face several challenges along the way. After finding out that Maya, the creator of Alphie, is in a coma, Joshua and Alphie bid farewell to her and disconnect her life support. Maya had a sympathetic bond with the simulants as she was raised by them. So, she created Alphie to stop Nomad, who was tracking down the simulants. Meanwhile, Joshua, who initially doubted the humanity of the AI beings, agrees to help her.
Joshua and Alphie are captured by the US military, who force Joshua to kill Alphie. But he refuses and only puts her on standby mode. They manage to escape on a shuttle and head towards Nomad to plant explosives on it, fighting their way through the soldiers guarding Nomad.
Meanwhile, Alphie encounters a simulant version of Maya and decides to upload the flash drive that contains the original Maya’s brain scans. Alphie has to leave Joshua behind as the shuttle’s hatch is jammed. Joshua reunites with the AI Maya before Nomad explodes, while Alphie lands safely and witnesses Nomad’s collapse as the simulant population rejoices.
1. What was Maya’s motive and plan?
Maya had a strong affinity for the AI community, as they had adopted and nurtured her. Her ultimate plan was to get rid of Nomad permanently, as the military had exploited the space weapon to oppress simulants for years.
Maya’s goal would not only liberate the simulants, but also empower the AI community to resist, with the help of Alphie’s existence and abilities. Maya’s creation of Alphie was also a breakthrough in evolution. While previous AI beings were mere replicas of humans, Alphie’s ability to adapt mentally and enhance her powers would have narrowed the gap between humans and simulants. As for Maya’s identity, Joshua’s unit had discovered that Maya was actually Nirmata.
2. Does Maya die in the film?
Maya fell into a coma after Nomad’s attack, and she remained unconscious for five years. Joshua finally plugged off her life support, allowing her to rest in peace. However, The Creator suggests that no one truly dies as long as simulants exist, as shown by the possibility of downloading one’s brain onto a flash drive.
Maya lives on in other forms, through simulants resembling her, and especially through the AI possessing her memories. This version of Maya is short-lived, but she gets to reunite with Joshua before her end.
3. Why does Joshua change his mind about AI?
Joshua initially believes that simulants are not real people and does not encounter any opposition to his views. However, his interactions with Alphie gradually change his mind. He witnesses how Alphie is capable of feeling, kindness, and protection throughout the film, and his emotional bond with her is what makes him reconsider his initial beliefs.
Joshua’s change of mind about AI shows that people can be persuaded to reevaluate a previously prejudiced stance. The fact that Joshua grew to love Alphie – not only because she became like a daughter to him, but also because of her resolve and commitment to love – is a testament to humanity’s own evolution and potential to love instead of hate.
4. Alphie’s Nature Reveals a Deeper Truth About AI in Future
Alphie is a strange but exceptional character in the film. The AI child is not a simple replication of code, but an evolving simulant who can feel and empathize, as well as develop powers that can manipulate any kind of technology. That is significant for AI, and Alphie’s existence could lead to a lot of advancements regarding AI functionality.
It is possible that her powers will be duplicated, or that Alphie’s code will be examined in an attempt to help evolve the simulants. She is essentially the next stage in AI’s future, and understanding more about her specific functionality could be a game-changer in the way the AI community deals with attacks from the likes of Nomad, if they occur.
Such advancements could also change how the simulants interact with society. While the AI are more integrated throughout New Asia, Alphie being the bridge between humanity and simulants could elevate them and give them more agency within their human relationships, jobs, and other aspects of their daily life throughout the world.
Now that Nomad is no longer a threat, Alphie’s presence and power is no longer a substitute for hope. It can change the perception of AI and their global status, allowing them to evolve even further than before. Her abilities could also raise the question of AI having too much power, but it is not something the film fully explores.
5. Colonel Howell’s Objective Explained: Why did she lie to Joshua?
Colonel Howell had one objective – eliminate all AI at any cost. Deceiving Joshua about Maya being alive was just one of the things she did to achieve her goal. She had no regard for Joshua and was likely irritated that he had developed affection for someone she considered as the enemy.
However, that did not mean Howell was going to waste the opportunity to use Joshua’s emotional connection with Maya. Howell knew the only way to access Maya’s weapon was through Joshua as he was skilled at gaining trust, and motivated enough to find his wife that he would be willing to do whatever was necessary. It was also these attributes that ultimately turned against Howell, and she suffered the consequences for it.
6. Will there be ‘The Creator’ 2?
As of now, there are no official reports about a sequel to The Creator. However, there is always a chance of a sequel. If it happens, there are many issues that the sequel can deal with.
With Nomad eliminated, and Alphie surviving but isolated in the world, The Creator 2 could deal with a full revolution for the AI community. Nomad’s destruction could also provoke the US to retaliate, perhaps by constructing another Nomad (or something even more devastating), and a sequel to The Creator could explore what that could entail for the simulants. A sequel could also narrate what happens to Alphie in the aftermath of Nomad’s annihilation, and how she might assist the AI.
She is likely to embrace them as her family and continue to fight for AI liberation. Alphie witnessed Nomad’s capabilities, and experienced the animosity simulants face firsthand. The Creator sequel could follow the next phase in Alphie’s life, how her powers will influence AI’s future, and what comes next now that Nomad is no longer a menace.
