ABC’s The Conners premiered in October 2018 as a direct sequel to the famed 80s TV series Roseanne. The spinoff has graced our screens for five whole seasons, but now we’ve received an indication that the end of the show is near. Executive producer Bruce Helford claims that the next season could be the last season of The Conners.
In an interview with TVLine, the producer explained that they “don’t want to go out without knowing” where the finish line is so that they “can build to the right ending.”
While Helford did not “definitively” put season 6 as the last in the series “because the numbers were so good” for season 5, he mentioned season 6 being the final is “definitely a possibility.” Read his complete statement below:
[Quote] Sara Gilbert expressed to the network that we don’t want to go out without knowing that we are going out with a series finale so we can build to the right ending.
At this point in time, we feel that [next season] is possibly going to be the last season of The Conners. I would not [say that] definitively because the numbers were so good this season, and we’ve all had a really great time… but it’s definitely a possibility.
As if this wasn’t sad enough news, the producer also alluded to the possible final season being a shorter one. Don’t believe me? Read it in his words:
[Quote] The conversation right now is about how many episodes we can do [depending on] whatever happens with the writers’ strike. There may only be 13 episodes. Obviously, we always want to do 20 or 22, but at this point in time, we’re talking about if we can do 13 — God willing — and if we can do more, we’ll do more.
So, there you have it! While this news feels like it was inevitable after the season 5 finale of the series, it is still a little sad. Mark’s graduation and Darlene & Ben’s working relationship could mean the three would be departing soon, and it seems like the writers are currently working toward the end.
ABC has not confirmed this news nor renewed the series for season 6, but it is all but done at this point. But at least now we can believe that the series conclusion will be airtight and satisfying if it comes from such an early thinking phase.
Do you believe the producers are making the right choice by ending the show with season 6? Let us know in the comments below!
