Is Rebel Moon a Part of the Star Wars Franchise? The Connection Explained

Rebel Moon: Part One- A Child of Fire has already hit Netflix, and many are wondering whether the film has any connection with the Star Wars saga. Why? Because the film has a barrage of subtle and not-so-subtle similarities with the galaxy far, far away.

Rebel Moon is a space opera that stars Kora (Sofia Boutella) as the Luke Skywalker-esque protagonist who’s shown to be badass from the word go.

The main story centers around the rebel group as they battle to stop the fascist regime of the Motherworld, which often feels like the rebels fighting against the Empire.

These uncanny similarities were expected because filmmaker Zack Snyder originally conceived Rebel Moon as a part of the Star Wars franchise. However, the pitch didn’t work out, and Snyder decided to turn it into an independent franchise. It is also certain that A Child of Fire will be followed by its sequel, The Scargiver, in April next year.

Is Rebel Moon a part of Star Wars?

Rebel Moon is not a part of Star Wars but was initially pitched as a Star Wars movie by Zack Snyder. Although the film has many similarities and references to Star Wars, its plot has no connection with the universe.

Lucasfilm rejected Zack Snyder’s pitch for the Rebel Moon movies, which coerced him to produce the films as part of an independent franchise. His wife and producing partner, Deborah Snyder, encouraged him to start working on the film.

Read what Zack himself said in an interview:

When it turned out that wasn’t gonna work out, my wife and producing partner Deborah said to me, ‘This is the best news that you possibly could have gotten,’

The process of creating this world, though exhausting and very time-consuming – and really the amount of detail is insane – has been incredibly rewarding because it does give you the ability to deconstruct sci-fi icons and tropes that you’re used to.

In the quest to create the perfect pitch for Lucasfilm, Snyder laid the foundation for the Rebel Moon franchise. Although the franchise has several similarities with Star Wars, it does stand on its own to create an exciting universe for the fans to get lost in.

Given the fact that we have so few entries in the space opera genre, I’m extremely pumped to explore what Snyder has to offer in his new space odyssey.
