The much-anticipated third installment of the Conjuring franchise released today, and it’s got more than just old-school horror. Written by James Wan and David Leslie, this new addition to the blockbuster franchise has been directed by Michael Chaves, and he gives this film a new tonality.
1. Quick Review
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It
Air Date: June 4, 2021 Status: Finished Studio: New Line Cinema, The Safran Company, Atomic Monster ProductionsThe film is a decent watch. It’s a lot less scary compared to its predecessors but has elements of bleakness and nostalgia that cast a gloomy shadow. You can see that Ed and Lorraine Warren are aging, and all their work against demonic spirits has taken quite a toll on them. This is also reflected in the pacing of the film, which is quite mellow.
2. Is It worth Watching?
If you’re looking for jump scares and ominous music that sends chills down your spine, then no. You won’t find those here. However, if you’re looking for a sober blend of horror and warm chemistry between the lead pair, you can check it out.
3. Plot
The film begins with an exorcism going wrong. The demonic spirit leaves David Glatzel, an 8-year-old boy, and enters Arne Johnson, his sister’s boyfriend. Arne then keeps encountering paranormal occurrences until he ends up killing his neighbor.
The story revolves around the case of The State vs. Ed & Lorraine, who stand by the fact it wasn’t manslaughter but an act of the devil. But don’t worry, this isn’t a courtroom drama, and the plot keeps its focus on what caused this possession in the first place. This time around, the Warrens ae facing their biggest enemy so far, and you have to watch to know what happens next.
I. Cast and Characters
Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga have reprised the roles of Ed & Lorraine Warren. This time, though, they’re not as aggressive as in the earlier installments. The plotline focuses more on them than the demon itself, and maybe here’s where it might leave the fans of the franchise divided.
While some might appreciate an emotional depth to these characters that we’ve seen for so long, others might think it takes away from the thrill and the horror. Nevertheless, their chemistry is what keeps this underwhelming horror flick going.
4. Final Thoughts and Grade
The horror genre is constantly trying to evolve, with shows like The Haunting of Hill House not being about just jump scares, but a deeper emotional connection. The third Conjuring film attempts to depict that depth but falls short. Instead, it gives us a mixed bag of emotions that leaves us clueless about what to focus on.
