The anime has messy pacing and plotline but nonetheless does a great job of keeping the audience engaged.

3. Quick Review
I. Story and Characters
Saying that Elfen Lied has a complicated story would be an insult to all the anime with actually complicated plots.
However, it is safe to say that it tried to have a complicated story but got distracted by all the ecchi elements the show has.
The pacing is all over the place. The first half of the show was barely above average, but as soon as we enter the second half, the pace gets unbearably show.
Of course, it has loads of fan-service is every episode to cover up the mess, and if you don’t watch Elfen Lied for its story and plot, you’ll surely love every moment!
The characters in Elfen Lied are unrealistic. From the main leads to the antagonists, there are barely any characters that have actual depth.
Just like the story, the characters tried too hard to accomplish too many things and ended up being bland.
II. Animation and Sound
The animation was slightly above average with some epic moments. However, it could not save the story from being a complete mess.
Finally, an actual good aspect of the show was its soundtrack. The soundtrack is brilliant, especially the opening.
The first few episodes of the show drastically change their ratings from below average to totally amazing just because of the music that plays during the bloody action! However, the soundtrack gets overused and loses all of its charms.
