With less than two months to go for Marvel’s Eternals, curiosity levels are reaching their peak.
Eternals is a part of Marvel’s Phase 4 movie releases, and they are bound to turn the tables on the power hierarchy in the MCU. At least the ones that movie-goers know of.
Directed by the Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao, Eternals is one of the highly-anticipated releases of 2021. Also because of its incredibly star-studded cast.
The Eternals’ cast is on the cover of Total Film’s October 2021 issues, and they talk about many things. One of them being the stellar cast explaining their superpowers in their own words.
The interview in Total Film (via Screenrant) has Richard Madden, Lauren Ridloff, Barry Keoghan, Brian Tyree Henry, Kumail Nanjiani, Lia McHugh, and more talking about every superhero in Eternals and their abilities.
Without further ado, let’s hop in.
Richard Madden on Ikaris’ powers:
His powers are pretty cool. He’s really very strong, and has the ability to fly and shoot lasers from his eyes. I suppose the main challenge was trying to make something look effortless.
Richard Madde
Lauren Ridloff on Makkari’s powers:
Her most obvious power is speed, but how she manipulates speed as a weapon is just brilliant, so her true power is her smarts.
Lauren Ridloff
Barry Keoghan on Druig’s powers:
He uses mind-control to manipulate and control people. He doesn’t do anything with his hands. He just stares, which is kind of cool.
Barry Keoghan
Brian Tyree Henry on Phastos’ powers:
They like to call him a techno-path, which basically means he can use his mind and his energy to literally assemble anything out of any technology around him.
Brian Tyree Henry
Kumail Nanjiani on Kingo’s powers:
He can shoot beams from his arms. From his hands, he shoots beams. Obviously, they add laser beams in post. I didn’t go that method with it. I took martial arts and dance classes to figure out what his motion would be when he was shooting.
Kumail Nanjiani
Lia McHugh on Sprite’s powers:
Sprite can cast illusions! Her powers are utilized in a lot of creative ways in Eternals that become very relevant to the story.
Lia McHugh
Gemma Clan on Sersi’s powers:
Sersi can manipulate matter. So inanimate – I suppose – substances or objects, she can transmute them into other things. Which is pretty useful. That’s a good thing.
Gemma Clan
Angelina Jolie on Thena’s powers:
I was given the ‘could manifest weapons in my hands’ [power]. A lot of my training was really fun, to try to figure out how to fight that way.
Angelina Jolie
Salma Hayek on Ajak’s powers:
Another thing that inspired me was that her superpower is healing. That very much is the sensation of a mother.
Salma Hayek
Don Lee on Gilgamesh’s powers:
Gilgamesh is immortal, has superhuman strength, and is considered the strongest of the Eternals. He has a unique one-punch knockout attack like a heavyweight boxer. As a long-time boxer myself, I tried to add a lot of real boxing movements.
Don Lee
However, one’s powers that comes off as a slight surprise is Harington’s Dane Whitman, who, by his explanation, looks like a mere human being. At least for now.
Kit Harington on Dane Whitman’s powers:
I’d just like a power. It was very cool, my interaction with those characters. It was cool to see – and also very jealous-making.
Kit Harington
Eternals will be introduced in the MCU, and we’ve already seen a glimpse of their connection with the previous phases.
Such as in the final movie trailer, where it’s revealed that the Celestials had strict instructions for the super-powerful immortals living on Earth for thousands of years – not to interfere with any human conflicts. Unless it has Deviants involved.
We also caught a glimpse of Deviants, the villains that will keep our Phase 4 superheroes busy throughout.
As the MCU expands, we see more superheroes out of comics and onto our screens. The same is for the Eternals. In the comics, everyone is capable of telepathy, super strength, and a lot more. However, as explained by the actors, we specialize in some abilities as far as the movie goes.
Marvel’s Eternals will show their true selves in theaters for the first time on November 5, 2021.
