Episode 4 of the Case Study of Vanitas, part 2, titled “The Beast,” is the latest installment of the anime.
This episode gave us an insight into Jean-Jacques’ authentic self. We thought that he was a kind and gentle soul, but beneath that exterior lay a man full of anger. He’s on a mission to hunt down anyone who tries to harm Chloe.
On the other hand, it seems like Chloe has been hiding something. We were made to believe that she’s friends with Naenia, but now that the alteration engine is on, she used it to materialize Naenia’s shadowy form.
What is Chloe’s real plan? Will she save Jean from his horrible beast form? Keep watching to find out.
Episode 5 Speculation
In the next episode, Jeanne will face the Beast of Gevaudan, Jean-Jacques. She doesn’t know that the beast isn’t Chloe yet, but she’s focused on killing the monster regardless of that.
Noe will also continue fighting with Astolfo but knowing him, he’s probably going to try to reason with him. Maybe Noe will ask him why he hates all vampires indiscriminately or will try to explain that not all of them are bad.
Lastly, we’ll get a clearer picture of Chloe’s real plan. We initially thought that she wanted to destroy all of Gevaudan, but now that she has imprisoned Naenia, maybe she’s planning something else.

Episode 4 Recap
Vanitas, Dante, Johann, and Jeanne make their way towards the castle and witness the butchering of the Gevaudan royal guards once again. This makes them realize that they’ve been stuck in a time loop.
Desperate to end this mess, Jeanne blasts off towards Chloe, and Vanitas accompanies her.
Back at the castle, Jean-Jacques pushes Noe into a room because he keeps interrupting Chloe. It is revealed that he mixed something in Noe’s food that would put him to sleep. Before Noe could collapse.
Jean forces him to drink his blood so that he can look at his past. He says that after everything is over, he wishes for someone to remember him and Chloe.
As Noe drinks Jean’s blood, we’re taken to a flashback where a young Jean is being abused by his drunk father. His mother and little siblings are also victims of domestic abuse, and this causes him to run away from home.
While hiding in the wilderness, Jean gets discovered by Chloe, and he asks her if she’s the silver witch. Chloe notices Jean’s red-colored eyes, and the two realize that they’re the same.
Meanwhile, the people of Gevaudan are plagued by the fear of a mysterious beast, and because they’re unable to find a culprit, they blame the murders on Chloe.
Jean and Chloe’s friendship deepens, and he realizes that Chloe isn’t behind the beast and instead, she’s actively trying to fight it. He defends her, but no one believes him.
Chloe is driven into depression, and Jean tells her that he’ll keep her safe forever. He wants to become more powerful and falls into Naenia’s trap.
When the villagers come for Chloe, he transforms into the beast and kills them all to protect her. Noe suddenly wakes up and realizes that Jean is the beast of Gevaudan. Back in the past, we finally see Chloe getting manipulated by Naenia, who shows her how Jean has turned into a monster in order to protect her.
When she goes to save him, Jeanne arrives there to kill her. Even though Chloe is happy to see Jeanne getting stronger, she swiftly escapes with Jean and goes into isolation. Noe then regains his consciousness and finally reunites with Vanitas.
He tells him everything about Jean’s past, and the two decide to find Chloe. On their way, they find Astolfo, who still intends to kill Noe. Noe asks Vanitas to leave and faces Astolfo one-on-one.
Vanitas finally finds Chloe and sees her operating the alteration engine using a piano. He asks her to return his book, and she casually tells him to look around the room to find it. She says that she was intrigued by the book but couldn’t use it since it won’t open.
Naenia makes an entrance and tells Vanitas about Chloe’s plan for seeking vengeance. She says that Chloe is going to erase Gevaudan’s existence from the face of the earth.
Chloe announces that the analysis is complete, but when the engine activates, Naenia is pulled in and is forced to take a bodily form.
As the episode ends, Chloe walks towards Naenia, asking how to end her perpetual nightmare and lay hands upon her incorporeal form.
About The Case Study of Vanitas
The Case Study of Vanitas manga is created by Jun Mochizuka. It started serialization in the Monthly Gangan Joker magazine in December 2015. It is receiving an anime adaptation in July 2021.
Noe, a young vampire, is in search of a cursed book called The Book of Vanitas. However, on his flight to Paris, he comes face to face with Vanitas and realizes that he is a self-proclaimed vampire doctor.
Somehow Noe ends up as Vanitas’ partner to heal vampires who are going feral under an evil influence.
