Episode 2 of The Case Study of Vanitas, part 2, titled “The Witch and the Young Man,” is the latest installment of the anime.
Jeanne and Vanitas are closer than ever. After discovering a deep poisonous wound on Vanitas, Jeanne drags him out of the cold and tends to him all night. His body was weak due to a fever, and Jeanne found a rather romantic way to keep him hydrated.
Jeanne also told him about the curse-bearing beast. Her name was Chloe, and she got pretty close to Jeanne when she was a child.
After they parted ways, Chloe somehow turned into a beast and wreaked havoc. Jeanne was ordered to slay the beast, which was why she was there.
Also, Noe has been kidnapped by Chloe and a man named Jean-Jacques. At first, they didn’t look evil, but we soon saw Charlatan joining them for dinner.
Who exactly is Chloe, and what is she planning? How will Noe react to Charlatan’s presence? Keep watching to find out.
Episode 3 Speculation
Vanitas and his group will continue searching for Noe in the next episode. Even though Jeanne and Vanitas have different goals, they still decide to go to the castle together. After their intimate night, it seems like they are getting closer and are developing genuine feelings.
Vanitas’ past is still a mystery, but it’s safe to say that he is starting to care about those around him. On the other hand, Noe is still a little naïve, so his reaction to seeing Charlatan might land him into trouble.
Usually, vampires do not want to be cursed by Charlatan’s parade, but Chloe doesn’t seem wary of him and seems to be working with him. We still don’t know why she needs the Book of Vanitas, but there might be answers to that in her past.

Episode 2 Recap
Jeanne finds an injured Vanitas and takes him to a secluded cabinet. She tends to his wounds and helps him stay hydrated. The two sit in front of a fireplace to keep warm. Vanitas then asks her about the beast and if she knows anything about it.
Jeanne tells him that the beast is a vampire named Chloe. Her parents were Lord Ruthven’s students, so when she was little, they would travel together to all sorts of places.
Once, she was left in the care of Marquis d’Apchier, at his castle in Gevaudan. Chloe lived in the castle too, and it was there where she first met her.
Chloe was a vampire, hidden away by Marquis d’Apchier. She looked like a young girl but was older than Ruthven himself. Chloe also taught Jeanne many things, from academics to games. Jeanne was happy in her company since it made her feel like she had an older sister.
Jeanne met her next time when she was a Bourreau, tasked to kill a cursed Chloe. It was too much for her, and she failed to slay the beast. This is also why she was there to slay Chloe once the rumors of the beast started resurfacing again.
Vanitas’ fever wears off the next day, and Jeanne finds him bantering with Johann. The two men are arguing over the loss of their partners, Dante and Noe. Johann introduces himself to Jeanne, and just then, Dante comes running towards them.
Johann is relieved to reunite with Dante, and Vanitas asks him about Noe’s whereabouts. Dante tells him that the Silver Witch who turned into the beast took him away. Dante and Johann know something about the beast that they’re not telling Vanitas.
Vanitas threatens to kill them if they don’t give him the information. Dante obliges and decides to tell him everything on their way to the castle.
We then cut to Astolfo, sitting by a fire in a cave. He’s soon approached by his underling, who complains how Astolfo shouldn’t become reckless. This makes Astolfo angry, and he storms off to the beast’s castle.
At the castle, Noe wakes up to Chloe sucking his blood without consent. He becomes very uncomfortable but is soon saved by a man named Jean-Jacques, who pulls Chloe away.
Jacques got jealous that Chloe was sucking another man’s blood and separated her from him.
He then asks Noe to get dressed and meet them downstairs. Confused about his situation, Noe decides to go along with Chloe and Jacques.
As he meets his two captors, an unwanted presence troubles him. The episode ends with Noe horridly staring at Charlatan’s shadow lurking behind Chloe.
