Mangaka Gou Tanabe Returns with ‘The Call of Cthulhu’ Cosmic Horror

Dark Horse Comics announced that it has licensed Gou Tanabe’s manga adaptation of ‘The Call of Cthulhu.’

The company will release the manga adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s work by Tanabe in a single paperback volume translated by Zack Davisson. Dark Horse will make the manga available in bookstores on July 31, 2024, and in comic bookstores on August 1, 2024.

The story revolves around Francis Wayland Thurston’s investigation into the unusual activities of a cult group that worships an ageless being known as Cthulhu, who sleeps beneath the sea, waiting to awaken and cause destruction.

The original story inspired many X-box horror role-playing games such as ‘Cthulhu Saves the World,’ ‘Cthulhu Saves Christmas,’ and ‘Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth.’

Several adaptations of ‘Call of Cthulhu’ have been made, including in the TV shows, ‘Eerie’ and ‘The Avengers.’ ‘The Real Ghostbusters’ also referenced the original work in its season 2 episode “Collect Call of Cthulhu.”

A silent film of the same name was produced in 2005, and a 1920s-style radio drama called ‘Dark Adventure Radio Theatre: The Call of Cthulhu’ was released in 2012.

The story is considered a masterpiece of literature and is widely regarded as one of the most significant works in the horror genre. It is an ambitious and complex tale with a dense and subtle narrative that gradually builds to cosmic proportions, evoking a sense of horror that is truly unique. About The Call of Cthulhu

The Call of Cthulhu’ is a short story by American writer H. P. Lovecraft. Written in the summer of 1926, it was first published in the pulp magazine Weird Tales in February 1928. A manga adaptation was made by the modern horror mangaka Gou Tanabe and licensed by Dark Horse Comics.
