When you want to take a break from regular superhero titles, opt for the novelty of The Boys. The satirical show will be returning for its third season on July 8 and has dropped its highly anticipated trailer.
In the last season, we left off with Stormfront being severed from her powers (quite literally) by getting her limbs lasered off. Besides this, Vought’s lie about how the supes were created is also out in the public. A lot of damage control is needed stat.
The Boys S3 hints that Homelander is mentally unwell after Stormfront’s shocking reveal and may go on a rampage of destruction. To combat this, Butcher is seen injecting himself with a liquid that will make him a supe for a day.
There is a lot to talk about in this trailer, especially because it has so many tease-reveals, plus some characters we’ve been waiting for ardently. So, let’s get into it!
1. There’s Something Wrong with Homelander
The trailer begins with multiple interviews of Homelander apologizing for the havoc created by his ex-wife, Stormfront, who turned out to be a Nazi. In his carefully practiced script, he wants to ensure that people no longer associate him with her, so that he can show everyone his “true” self.
But when we get Starlight’s voiceover of ”there’s something wrong with Homelander,” it really makes us look at him twice. Homelander’s eyes are glassy with no emotion, despite the eerie smile on his face.
Getting over his ex is not easy for him, as we see in the next few shots of him caressing her bloodstain on the bed. This is a warning to expect something even more chaotic than last season.
2. New Characters: Soldier Boy and Crimson Countess
There is no doubt that fans have been super excited about finally having Jensen Ackles’ Soldier Boy in S3. In the comics, he’s created as a direct satirical jab at Captain America—so definitely do not expect anything ethical from him.
Crimson Countess is another character being introduced in S3. Played by Laurie Holden, she is one of the early-era supes with the ability to make people spontaneously burst into goo.
She is seen to be in a military-like setting, which could be the show exploring the history of Vought in the 60s, 70s, and 80s, as they promised.
3. Ryan Moves in with Butcher
In S2, Stormfront went on a rampage of attacking people, Ryan’s mom being one of them. Although Ryan neutralizes Stormfront with his attack, he also ends up killing his mother by mistake.
Clearly, Homelander is not taking home any Father of the Year awards, as we see Butcher step in for the role instead. In the trailer, he’s seen to be taking care of Ryan and reforming his ways, which include staying sober, giving up being a vigilante, and trading it for working for Hughie and the Federal Bureau of Superhuman affairs.
4. Where Are The Boys?
While Butcher is working on an oath of no violence against the Seven, the rest of The Boys, too, seem to be doing their own thing for a while.
In one frame, we see Mother’s Milk at his daughter’s birthday party, where ironically, she is dressed as Starlight. In another frame, Frenchie and Kimiko seem to be grooving to a dance number in a hospital.
5. Butcher Goes Supe
Although we think Butcher has given up fighting, the trailer instantly flips it out to be not true as he is seen shooting lasers out of his eyes. The explanation is that Maeve gives Butcher some small green vials that will make him a supe for 24 hours once injected.
This also makes it seem like Maeve is working for The Boys in some capacity to take down Homelander. As for the reason why Butcher even considers becoming a supe, it’s pretty obvious that the power levels the playing field and could be a necessary aid to him.
6. Stan Edgar and the Seven
With Homelander prone to going berserk, Stan Edgar has to maintain an even tighter fist over the Seven. As such, he tries to explain to Starlight that real power isn’t really the ability to shoot lasers out of your hand, but rather “the ability to bend the world to your will.”
We don’t know what exactly he is planning, but it obviously cannot be good. With all the blood, gore, and buildings tumbling down in the trailer, seat belts won’t be enough for the outrageous ride that will be The Boys S3.
7. About The Boys
The Boys is an American satirical superhero streaming television series developed by Eric Kripke for Prime Video. Based on the comic book of the same name by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, which was originally published by DC Comics under their Wildstorm imprint before moving to Dynamite Entertainment, it follows the eponymous team of vigilantes as they combat superpowered individuals who abuse their abilities.
The show is a satirical take on the superhero genre and showcases a world where superheroes are corporatized and controlled by companies. What happens when these superheroes step out of line and rub some boys the wrong way, is the story.
