The Boys Showrunner Reveals Why He Doesn’t Want to Keep Pumping Spinoffs

The Boys, based on the comic series of the same name, premiered on Amazon Prime on July 26, 2019. The show has since been one of Prime’s most successful original programs and has also been renewed for several seasons, with Season 3 ending on July 8, 2022, and Season 4 already in production..

In September of 2020, it was announced that The Boys would have a spinoff series titled Gen V. The series will explore a superhero college run by Vought International and the young Supes as they navigate college life while also dealing with their own superpowers.

Jaz Sinclair and Lizzie Broadway will star in Generation V, while Patrick Schwarzenegger will play the role of Golden Boy. Filming is expected to end in October of 2022, but a release date has not been announced yet.

In an interview with The Wrap, Kripke said that he feels no need to cram spinoffs into The Boys universe. Rather than actively seeking out potential spinoff plots, Kripke says the producers stumbled upon Gen V by chance.

Kripke says Gen V will provide a realistic look at college life on television, something he feels has not been done very often in the past.

[…]the goal for this is to make this superhero show one of the most realistic college shows anyone’s made. And really deal with real college issues and really explore what it’s like to be that age.

Kripke has failed to create successful spinoffs from his other shows before, but Gen V seems to have great potential. Kropke’s CW series Supernatural produced a spinoff series in 2014 called Supernatural: Bloodlines, but it was not picked up after the pilot. In 2018, another spinoff series called Supernatural: Wayward Sisters was attempted, but did not succeed. The Winchesters, a prequel to Supernatural, aired on October 11, 2022, a full year after Supernatural ended.

In contrast to Kripke’s previous spinoffs, Gen V seems to have evolved naturally rather than as an extension of The Boys universe.

With shows like The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, and Supernatural launching new spinoff series in the next year, it appears that spinoffs are officially on the rise. Hopefully, the successful conclusion of The Boys Season 3 will allow Kripke to finally make a successful spinoff series.

About The Boys

The Boys is an American satirical superhero streaming television series developed by Eric Kripke for Prime Video. Based on the comic book of the same name by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, which was originally published by DC Comics under their Wildstorm imprint before moving to Dynamite Entertainment, it follows the eponymous team of vigilantes as they combat superpowered individuals who abuse their abilities.

The show is a satirical take on the superhero genre and showcases a world where superheroes are corporatized and controlled by companies. What happens when these superheroes step out of line and rub some boys the wrong way, is the story.
