“The Boy and The Heron” Earns the New Three-Day Opening Record

Hayao Miyazaki is no less than a magician. After creating legendary blockbuster movies like Howl’s Moving Castle, Spirited Away, and Princess Mononoke, he is returning with a new sensation.

“The Boy and Heron” was a movie shrouded in mystery. There was no information on the plot line or a trailer. If any other studio attempted this weird mystery strategy, they would instantly drown. But this is Hayao Miyazaki, and the first weekend earnings are here to prove that.

According to the news website, Deadline, Hayao Miyazaki’s latest feature film, “The Boy and the Heron,” earned about US$13.2 million in its opening weekend in Japan. The film exceeded US$1.7 million from 44 IMAX screens, a new three-day opening record.

GKIDS, which has been known to license multiple films like “5 Centimeters per Second” and “My Neighbour Totoro,” got the permit for “The Boy and the Heron.” It will release the movie in North American theatres later this year.

This movie is the first Studio Ghibli production released simultaneously on IMAX. The film is also screened in Dolby Atmos, Dolby Cinema, and DTS: X.

It’s no surprise that the movie did so well since all the big names in the industry have worked on this production.
