Based on the response from the preview screenings, Deadline predicts that the film will make US$10.7 million in its opening weekend and estimates the film earned US$5.4 million on Friday.
However, these earnings don’t come as a surprise since all the big names in the industry have worked on this production. Hayao Miyazaki is credited with the original work, while Takeshi Honda(Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea) was responsible for the animation.
Kenshi Yonezu, who is single-handedly ruling the J-Pop industry, has performed the theme song, “Chikyūgi,” or “Spinning Globe.”
‘The Boy and The Heron’ is the story of Mahito, who loses his mother during the fire bombings of Tokyo after the Second World War. He and his father move to the countryside, where Mahito’s father gets remarried to his late mother’s pregnant sister.
As Mahito struggles with his situation, he encounters a talking heron and enters another world based on a promise that he can meet his mother again.
