The Blue Beetle Trailer Hints at a New Superman in the DCU

A new trailer for Blue Beetle, a new superhero film from the DC Universe, has been released. Warner Bros. Pictures and Safran Company are co-producing this action spectacle, which will be released globally in August. The release date of the film in the USA has been set as August 18.

Angel Manuel Soto directs the film, which portrays the superhero’s origin story. The film centers on Jaime Reyes, a recent university graduate who comes back home with hopes for his future. His life changes dramatically when he finds an ancient alien biotechnology artifact called the Scarab, which grants him remarkable armor with unforeseen abilities.

Blue Beetle is paving the way for the new DC Universe, even though it was not originally designed to do so. Gunn has disclosed that his new franchise features superheroes who are already established and active in this continuity.

For instance, it is shown by the premise of Superman: Legacy that it will depict a younger Clark Kent, who is already a superhero. Since Blue Beetle has referenced both Batman and Superman, it is possible that other DC heroes who are part of the new franchise will be hinted at in the film.

Blue Beetle can be seen as a subtle introduction to Gunn’s DC Universe Chapter 1, “Gods and Monsters,” or, in comic book terms, issue #0 of the broader universe. It may not have direct connections to projects like Superman: Legacy, The Brave, and The Bold, or some of the Max shows, such as Lanterns, but it’s a small glimpse of this specific segment of DC Studios’ new continuity.

Another advantage of Blue Beetle is that it only mentions the DC heroes verbally, without showing them visually, thus avoiding inconsistency with the DC Universe later on when they have more actors and costumes ready.

With the release date approaching, the performance of Blue Beetle in terms of reviews and revenue will be revealed soon, especially after The Flash movie failed at the box office.
