Matt Reeves’ The Batman is not a superhero movie. It’s a horror movie and this newly released clip is enough to prove that.
As the film’s March release inches closer, Warner Bros has started promoting it with all its might. The aforementioned never-before-seen clip was noticed by some fans as it began playing as an ad before YouTube videos.
In the almost 3-minute-long scene, we see Bella Reál talking to Bruce Wayne at Don Mitchell Jr.’s funeral. Bruce isn’t really into the conversation as his eyes meet the orphaned boy’s, and you can sense the strong emotions and empathy conveyed without him uttering a single word.
Jim Gordon in the back discusses the missing case of D.A. Gil Colson with some Gotham PD officers. Bruce then notices the Riddler’s silhouette as the serial killer stares down at him from the triforium.
Bruce realizes something is sketchy, and right on cue, a car crashes into the church as he leaps forward to save Mitchell’s son.
As a frightened Colson struggles to make his way out of the car, everyone rushes away from him upon spotting an explosive device around his neck. A sign on his chest reads “To The Batman,” and the phone taped to his palm starts ringing.
The Batman Funeral Scene:
This scene stitches into some other shots we’ve seen in the previous trailers. Gil Colson presumably dies in this scene as in the very first trailer, we see Batman get blown away due to an explosion in the church.
The trailers have all established that Riddler is a mass murderer laying down a trail of dead bodies like bread crumbs to get to Batman. His watching Bruce so closely again confirms that he might’ve already figured out Batman’s real identity.
The clip is so intense that you have to voluntarily take a breather when it ends. The pacing and the atmosphere are stress-inducing, making the urgency of the matter more intense—a trait similar to the film’s theme, which was released two days ago.
The Batman – Michael Giacchino:
Reeves’ recent statement to MovieMaker magazine further solidifies that Bruce is still hurting over his parents’ death:
Bruce is desperate to try and make a change. He’s still stuck, to be honest, emotionally stunted at being 10 years old, because that’s a trauma you don’t get past—witnessing your parents’ murder in this place. He’s looking to create meaning, right? This is the only meaning he can find… I think he imagines that if he can do this, somehow he can reverse what’s happened, which will never be reversed. This is a very human impulse, right? To try and relive something and remake it.
The Batman is currently set for a theatrical release on March 4.
