Maomao has proven her skills yet again in this episode as she expertly handles a distraught man begging for aid. She is once again applauded by Jinshi, who also consults her about something that feels like a serious matter. However, Maomao is unable to offer insight due to a lack of knowledge.
Everybody is preparing for the garden party being hosted by the emperor. Maomao gets dragged into it against her will, but this leads to several heartwarming moments throughout the episode. The garden party feels like the start of something bigger. Here are some of the latest updates.

2. Episode 6 Speculation
The sixth episode will start off with the beginning of the garden party. It is all set in place already, and now the buffet will begin. Maomao has already prepared for every possible ailment that they could encounter and taken it into consideration. Now it is Maomao’s turn to do what she does best: taste and tell food.
However, the mystery of the rashes is still unfounded, and it is highly possible that the garden party is going to have some sort of commotion related to it. We were shown a brief instance of somebody uncovering the bandages hiding their rashes. The next episode is bound to touch on that.
Jinshi’s concern over the people who have suffered from these rashes might lead to something sinister brewing in the shadows. The garden party is not going to end peacefully after all this build-up. It is up to Maomao and her knowledge to save the day.
3. Recap of Episode 5
In the fifth episode, titled “Covert Operations”, we are shown Jinshi and Basen training in their sword fighting skills. Jinshi easily overpowers Basen with his diverse techniques. Jinshi being such a skilled fighter reveals more about his character. While winding down, he asks if Maomao has gained weight and how he was surprised by her outburst last time.
We switch to Maomao, who is picking up some mushrooms happily. She would like to eat them on her own peacefully without having to reveal where she found them. Maomao first goes to Xiaolan and gives her the food the higher-ups gave her. They indulge in a gossip session.
Maomao then heads to the doctor, who she is sure won’t reveal her secrets as long as she shares. They cook the mushrooms and enjoy it, but they are interrupted by a man crying for help. He claims to be cursed and asks if they have a cure for it. Maomao observes that he has a nasty rash and goes to make an ointment.
The man reveals that he got the rashes on his palm while working. He found the bottom of a woman’s clothing with some wood and burnt it. However, the flame changed colors, and his hand got infected by rashes.
Maomao calmly demonstrates flame changing colors and explains how it is normal. She also prepares the ointment and tells the man that he probably got rashes because of the wood. Jinshi witnesses this and applauds Maomao’s skills. He asks Maomao to follow her. Jinshi asks her about the same topic, but it is out of her expertise.
Jinshi also makes a cheeky comment about how he likes his mushrooms, and Maomao leaves with a promise to look for them again tomorrow. Maomao starts wondering if people are using it to pass secret information, but she lets it go. She goes to Lady Gyokuyô’s chambers next, only to find it chaotic and happening.
Deliveries are being made in preparation for the garden party hosted by the emperor, and Maomao finds out she has to attend as she is one of the ladies in waiting for Lady Gyokuyô. Lady Gyokuyô is one of the four chief concubines, so her presence is necessary. This leads to Maomao being all dressed up for the garden party.
When Jinshi goes to visit Lady Gyokuyô and Maomao, it is revealed that her distinct freckles are actually just makeup, dried clay that she uses to make herself look less desirable in order to avoid getting dragged into alleyways. Jinshi feels apologetic and sad that Maomao has to resort to such methods to protect herself, but she reassures him that it is not his fault. He gives her a hairpin and pats her head in apology.
The episode wraps up as the food is being served for the garden party, and dancers have begun performing. However, there is an underlying tension, something that feels amiss in such a vibrant setting. The garden party begins.
