Episode 8 of ‘The Apothecary Diaries’ is titled “Wheat Stalks.” Maomao is back home and immediately called in for apothecary duties. A child drags her along and brings Maomao to a man and a woman who are unconscious.
A lady made them both throw up, but they were still not awake. Maomao asks the woman to bring charcoal while pumping the man’s chest. They are eventually stabilized, but it is better to keep a check on them as they could have been poisoned.
A woman and the man were courtesan and customer. Maomao is investigating the crime scene when the child from earlier comes in with charcoal. Maomao tells her to call her father from the fields later.
Maomao’s dad arrives, and he immediately gets to work. He asks Maomao questions, gathering information while testing and teaching her. While trying to deduce the cause, Maomao notices the child from earlier sneaking into the customer’s room.
Maomao walks towards the child who is holding a knife over the customer, trying to kill him. She stops the child, who starts crying, saying the man deserves to die. The lady from earlier comes rushing in. Taking the situation in hand, she asks Maomao to talk to her.
The lady reveals how the customer is actually hated by many and has deceived courtesans in the past. The child knew when Maomao’s father would be out, so she pretended to call the apothecary. However, since Maomao was coincidentally at home, the child was surprised.
Maomao thinks back to everything that happened and realizes that it was a murder attempt. The courtesan carefully planned and executed it. Maomao decides to take a walk around the town to clear her head.
When Maomao is taking a bath, she is joined by Meimei. Meimei tells her how everyone was worried about Maomao when she disappeared. Maomao’s stay is over, and she leaves to return to the palace.
Maomao is called in by Jinshi, who seems really upset. Jinshi is jealous of Lihaku, but Maomao is just confused by his antics. Maomao’s vague words lead to a misunderstanding that shocks Jinshi. Jinshi is upset that Maomao did not go to him for help.
When Maomao leaves Jinshi’s parlor, Gyokuyou is outside laughing at her. She is further thrown into confusion but gets no answers.
