Maomao visits the Verdigris House in episode 16 of ‘The Apothecary Diaries’ titled “Lakan.” Maomao’s past memories trigger nightmares, and she cannot bring herself to focus on work. However, being around medicines makes her happy.

2. Episode 19 Speculation
Jinshi has figured out that Lakan is Maomao’s father by blood and has been after her for decades. However, Maomao clearly wants nothing to do with him, so Jinshi will do his best to ensure Lakan stays away.
However, Lakan does not seem to be the type to back out and will probably reach out to Maomao in another way.
There is also Suirei, who has been mysterious and seems to dislike Maomao since she met her. Her cryptic words probably mean something to Maomao, which we will learn about.
3. Recap of episode 16
Maomao barely manages to control her emotions while answering Jinshi’s question. However, that question triggers some bad memories, resulting in nightmares. Maomao wakes up in her house and has breakfast with her father, who asks her to visit the Verdigris House.
Maomao goes to the annex to check up on the courtesan locked there. She had gotten syphilis and was kept hidden instead of being kicked out. An old, persistent customer with a monocle visited again and Maomao was warned not to go outside.
Maomao bathes with Meimei and realizes she does not feel the ‘love’ they do as she was born without it. Jinshi is worried about Maomao’s behavior as she is standoffish and keeps zoning out.
Maomao has an errand to run in the palace pharmacy and is enamored. After getting Jinshi’s medicine, Maomao starts to wonder about his life. A noble of such a high standing, being a eunuch, is surprising.
Lakan drops by again and talks about how Jinshi stole Maomao from him while he spent decades convincing the Verdigris House to let him have his daughter. Lakan knows Jinshi’s actual position as well.
Lakan takes his leave, telling Jinshi to let Maomao know he’ll visit her sometime. Jinshi tells Maomao about this, but her expression makes him backtrack immediately, saying he’ll turn him down. Maomao ends up in the herb garden, and Suirei finds her again, cryptically telling her that she will plant some morning glories soon.

‘The Apothecary Diaries’ is a light novel series written by Natsu Hyuga and illustrated by Touko Shino. The series will be receiving an anime adaptation in 2023.
The story follows a young girl, Maomao, who is the daughter of an apothecary and possesses an extensive knowledge of medicine and herbs. When she is kidnapped and sold to the rear palace, she is forced to navigate life in this new, foreign environment.
