Jinshi makes a difficult decision in episode 12 of ‘The Apothecary Diaries’ titled “The Eunuch and the Courtesan.” Due to Fengming’s execution, the daughters of all the families involved with her were let go.
Maomao is one of them but does not want to leave the rear palace. However, she is unable to express her feelings clearly, and Jinshi misunderstands her again and lets her go.
Jinshi is depressed about Maomao’s departure, but he meets her outside the palace by coincidence. He is surprised to find out about her new part-time job.

2. Episode 13 Speculation:
Jinshi has bought Maomao off of the old lady’s hands. Maomao can now return to the rear palace. However, it is unclear whether she will return as a mere servant again, as she was promoted to Gyoukuyou’s lady-in-waiting before she was fired.
Gyoukuyou has a soft spot for Maomao, so she might want her back. Maomao has also proven her skills as an apothecary and taste-tester more often than not, so she might resume the same work as well.
3. Recap of episode 12
After Fengming’s execution, every family that was involved with her and had partaken in any form of business also suffered various degrees of capital punishment.
A mass lay-off is set to happen, and the daughters of the involved families are being let go. Maomao is a part of one of the said families, and Jinshi is torn between letting her go and leaving her job at the rear palace that she despises or making her stay.
Jinshi is afraid of widening the rift between them by making the wrong decision. However, he also does not want to be inconsiderate of Maomao’s feelings. Maomao does not want to get fired as she has yet to repay the old lady’s debts.
Maomao runs around the entire palace searching for Jinshi, and she finds out that she is being let go. Jinshi asks her what she wants, and she says she will do just as ordered. Her intentions are again unclear to Jinshi, who misunderstands and lets her go.
Maomao leaves, and Jinshi is depressed. Even Gyoukuyou is upset at his decision. Maomao starts working as a courtesan, and the old lady realizes that Maomao doesn’t look half bad when she gets dressed up. The courtesans get on with their job.
Maomao finds Jinshi moping in a corner, and they are both surprised to see each other. Jinshi finds out Maomao works as a part-time courtesan and is immediately worried. Maomao makes it clear that she does not take personal clients.
Jinshi asks if he can buy Maomao out of her job, and Maomao agrees. Maomao liked working in the rear palace, so it wouldn’t be a bad idea to go back. Jinshi realizes he misunderstood her yet again and laughs at her for not expressing herself properly.
Jinshi presses his fingers against Maomao’s lips after she finally allows him to touch her. He swipes the lipstick off and presses it against his own lips, which startles Maomao. Much to her bewilderment, her sisters and Gaoshun just nod in approval.
Jinshi eventually comes back and buys Maomao from the old lady.
