Episode 9 of ‘The Apothecary Diaries’ is titled “Suicide or Murder?” One of the low-level warriors slipped something in Kounen’s sake while he was out drinking. Meanwhile, Jinshi is still sulking about Maomao not choosing to go to him for help. Gyoukuyou cleared his misunderstanding, but he is still moping around.
Gaoshun is worried about Jinshi’s attachment to Maomao. Jinshi is acting childish and not focusing on his work. A man comes running to Jinshi’s parlor and delivers shocking news. Jinshi and Gaoshun visit Gyoukuyou to tell her that Kounen has passed away.

Jinshi brinks the sake Kounen was drinking, and Maomao tastes it to find that it is both sweet and salty. Jinshi tells her that Kounen developed a sweet tooth and only liked sweet sake. She asks for the jar Kounen was drinking.
The jar is broken into pieces, but Maomao swipes her finger across the inner surface to taste it. There is no poison, but it has too much salt, which is the cause of his death. He lost his ability to taste salt, so he could not tell that the sake had salt in it.
Jinshi gifts Maomao a jar of sake as a reward. When Maomao teases Jinshi about slacking off, he tells her about a bill stating an age restriction on alcohol consumption. Maomao is shocked and begs him not to pass it. A dead body is found, but Maomao has strict orders not to touch a corpse.
The death of the servant is assumed to be suicide. However, it is impossible for her to climb the walls to jump. Her fingers were also red and bloodied, which meant she was struggling to get out. This situation makes Maomao think about her own death, which upsets Jinshi.
