Amane and Mahiru spend New Year’s together in episode 5 of The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rottem, titled “Hatsumode with the Angel”. They go to their first shrine visit with Amane’s parents, dressed up for the occasion.

A rumor starts circulating in the school that Mahiru has a secret boyfriend, as someone saw them together at the shrine but didn’t recognize Amane.

Hearing Amane’s low self-opinion, Mahiru gets angry and starts listing his good points. However, as soon as she realizes what happened, she gets embarrassed the whole evening.

Mahiru has started getting more open with Amane and even called him her close friend. Chitose and Itsuki will also try to get closer to Mahiru and they may visit Amane’s apartment again. Since Mahiru doesn’t have any close female friends, it will be good for her to befriend Chitose. 

The peaceful relationship will continue, with a few bumps here and there. We might also be soon getting more on Amane’s backstory as it seems there was a serious reason he shifted. As he becomes more open with Mahiru, he may tell her.

Episode 5 Recap

Mahiru and Amane see the broadcast of the New Year’s bell-ringing ceremony and wish each other a happy new year. Amane gets a message from his parents that they will be visiting. Mahiru sleeps on Amane’s shoulder and troubled about what to do, he settles on letting her sleep on his bed. Amane teases her the next day and she gets embarrassed.

Amane’s parents arrive and Mahiru introduces herself to his father, Shuto. Shihoko, his mother, proposes to go together for the first shrine visit and tells them that she brought a yukata for Mahiru. Amane is apprehensive about the students at school seeing them together but dresses up so that no one can recognize him.

Shuto asks Amane about his school life. Remembering his bad life at his earlier school, he tells him that he is glad he came.

Amane is stunned when she sees Mahiru in a yukata and showers her with compliments. She also tells him he looks good, making them both flustered.

At the shrine, Mahiru keeps on tripping due to the crowd and her clothes, so Amane offers his arm for support. They drink soup together, and Amane asks Mahiru about her. They exchange glasses, and Mahiru asks if it doesn’t bother him.

Amane realizes his mistake and tells her he did it unconsciously since he is always like that with Itsuki and Chitose as they are friends. Mahiru tells him it’s fine since he is her close friend too.

They get back home and while they are saying goodbyes, Amane head pats Mahiru. His teasing gets to her and she runs away with her cheeks puffing, embarrassed.

Mahiru speaks highly of Amane as his parents are leaving. Amane tells him later that she doesn’t need to flatter him, but Mahiru chides her by saying all her compliments were genuine.

At the school, everyone starts thinking that Mahiru has a secret boyfriend since someone saw her together with Amane at the shrine. However, no one recognized him because of his get up.

At the apartment, they talk about the situation and Amane tells her that he can never see someone like him with her. Mahiru gets frustrated with his self-berating and starts listing all his good points. Amane gets embarrassed and goes to wash the dishes.

As realization hits Mahiru, she hides her face in embarrassment the whole evening.
