2. Episode 9 Speculation
Episode 9 of The Ancient Magus’ Bride season 2 is titled “A Burnt Child Dreads the Fire”. The episode will show us the climax of the group’s attempt at rescuing Philomela. We can expect a fight with the Sargant family’s mercenaries as Chise and her friends move forward. But with Ainsworth aiding them, no amount of resistance should pose a threat.
But what will happen to Zoe and Mr. Zaccheroni, who stayed behind to hold back the werewolf? Are they strong enough to defeat the beast? The bigger question is what Philomela’s current status is. Can she be saved, or is she beyond any kind of help? We also need to look out for what type of role Alcyone plays as her guardian in all this.
3. Recap of Episode 8
The episode starts with Philomela’s childhood and her life before her parent’s death. Alcyone is an artificial fairy created by Adam Sargant, Philomela’s father. Her primary duty was to protect and take care of Philomela.
The days were passing by happily. Throughout the years, Philomela wasn’t the only one growing up. The whole family was growing, including Alcyone, who had already become a part of it. Iris and Adam always treated her as a family member rather than an artificial being.
One fateful evening, while preparing lunch together, Adam tells Alcyone about their past and how he met Iris in the first place. Iris was sold off to the Sargant family for Adam to perform sorcery experiments on her.
But Iris’s nature and will to survive changed him, and one day, he left the Sargant mansion with Iris and changed his name. Now, he is on the run to protect Iris and the family he built.
Some days later, while Adam is out buying groceries, Iris recounts her old days with Adam and tells Alcyone about her feelings for him and Philomela. Alcyone promises that he will always protect her lady no matter what happens, even if Adam and Iris try to harm her.
This was the day when calamity struck. Adam’s mother, Philomela’s grandmother, sent mercenaries after the family now that Philomela is old enough. Adam and Iris both die in order to protect her. Alcyone tries to run away with the little lady, but the mercenaries catch up to them soon.
The flashback ends, and we are back at the Sargant mansion where Chise and Ainsworth met the mysterious crow lady. Ainsworth addresses her as the “Mistress of Winter and Night” and says she’s an ancient god.
She talks with Ainsworth about the maiden. While they were talking, a group of soldiers arrives. She decides to help Chise fight them, but to do so, Chise must properly give her name back. Chsie completes the chant with Ainsworth’s help and awakens the goddess “Morrigan”.
While the soldiers were getting massacred by her, Chise moves towards the mansion. Ainsworth finally brings out the others inside him, and the group runs forward. Suddenly, the werewolf that took Philomela away attacks them. Zoe tells the others that he’ll catch up as he and Zaccheroni sensei stay behind.
