After quite a few back and forths, the highly-awaited prequel of the dystopian sci-fi series The 100 has been canceled by The CW, confirmed TVLine. The 100 had an incredible seven-season run, starting in 2014 and ending last year.
The spinoff prequel was first announced in 2019 with a backdoor pilot episode in the last season of The 100. Even though it was in development for two years, the series wasn’t shelved, continuing fans’ curiosity to delve deeper into the post-apocalyptic universe shown throughout the epic run.
In May this year, the CW CEO Mark Pedowitz even shared that “it’s not done [away] in any way, shape or form,“ fuelling fans’ enthusiasm.
However, reports now state that it most definitely is done away with. TVLine’s report gives no reasons behind CW’s decision. Was it because of production delays, covid restrictions, finances, or something else? We’ll never know.
It might also be great to see another production company take up The 100, as it definitely has built a solid fanbase.
The 100 prequel spinoff was going to be set 97 years before the events of the original show, as creator Jason Rothenberg had revealed. The creator had even shared potential storylines for the prequel spinoff, including getting the characters back in space and meeting “the great, great, great grandparents” up in the Ark. He also wanted to explore the sibling rivalry between Callie and Reese, comparing their relationship with more of a Cain and Abel story.
Meanwhile, it seems like fans haven’t lost hope. The prequel cancellation news has revived them on Twitter, and they’re now demanding the spinoff series return or that HBO Max pick it up.
The 100 was released in 2014 with a great synopsis along with an impeccable cast and graphics. Ninety-seven years after a nuclear apocalypse has destroyed Earth, humans make space their home. A century later, when the spaceship, called the Ark, starts deteriorating too, 100 teenagers are sent on Earth to figure out its habitability.
With such an exciting premise and a loyal fandom, it’s unfortunate to see the prequel spinoff being shelved. Hopefully, someone might pick it up.
