Mangakas are known to involve historical events in their storyline, and the current pandemic times are proving to be an excellent plot for stories. Readers would also prefer reading something relatable while being stuck in this endless lockdown.
The 33rd issue of this year’s Kodansha’s Morning magazine revealed to its readers on July 16 that mangaka Tetsuya Chiba will begin publishing his Akudama manga about COVID 19 in the magazine’s next issue releasing on July 22.
Tetsuya Chiba has been posting his Akudama manga revolving around his characters’ everyday life amid the new coronavirus disease online on his MANGA Day to Day Twitter account.
The serialization of his manga in the 33rd issue of Kodansha’s Morning magazine will be his first manga to be published in 37 years after the end of his series titled, Otoko-Tachi that ran from 1982 to 1983.
Tetsuya Chiba is best known for his work on boxing manga titled “Ashita no Joe” (Tomorrow’s Joe), which ran from 1968 to 1973. The series has remained a cornerstone in Japanese popular culture for decades.
The manga has been adapted into two television animes by Studio TMS Entertainment in 1970 and 1980, including two anime films in 1980 and 1981. Ashita no Joe also received live-action adaptations in 1970 and 2007.
Megalo Box also quoted the original manga as the inspiration for the science fiction anime.
His one-shot manga titled Kaze no Yō ni Like the Wind also inspired a film back in 2016. The manga’s film adaptation was made possible after the author started a crowdfunding campaign on the Fundiy website.
