After Avengers: Endgame, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) is seeking inner peace in the new movie. He also looks beyond the events of Endgame and into the future. However, Thor’s plans to relax are trampled when the God Butcher (Christian Bale) threatens him, and he must now recruit friends to help defeat him.
In addition to Hemsworth, the movie features Thompson returning as Valkyrie, Natalie Portman as Jane Foster and The Mighty Thor, and writer/director Taika Waititi as the rock gladiator, Korg.
So far, Thor: Love and Thunder trailers have hinted at a lot of unexpected twists for both audiences and Thor himself. These range from a reforged Mjolnir wielded by Jane’s Mighty Thor to the unanticipated appearance of Zeus (Russell Crowe)—which confused some given that the Greek god comes from a different pantheon than Thor.
In the closing minutes of Endgame, Valkyrie was delegated the power to rule the New Asgard by Thor. Thor then joined the Guardians of the Galaxy instead of staying back to rule.
It is, however, extremely confusing why Valkyrie is referred to as the “king” of New Asgard, rather than any other kind of royal title.
In an interview with TotalFilm, the actress discussed the role of the character in the upcoming movie. According to her, Thor was supposed to be the next ruler but even after the responsibility was delegated to Valkyrie, they just “didn’t bother to change the title”. The character also is very liberal with loyal tags and title.
Read her full comment below:
“She’s a kind king. I know there’s been some confusion on the internet in terms of the gendering with her being king. The truth is, that’s the job that Thor was going to do, and then he just gave her the job, and we just didn’t bother to change the title, because the title is ‘king’, and she’s like, ‘Well, I can be king.’ The suits that she wears—we thought it was sort of a fun nod to Frida Kahlo.”
After Thor made Valkyrie King of New Asgard, she promised that she would make a lot of changes in their kingdom.
As these dynamics play out in Love and Thunder, previous comments from Waititi indicate that maybe Valkyrie isn’t happy with the role she’s been given.
In fact, Thor 4 trailers have already hinted that Valkyrie is missing her days as a warrior while the community has become more bureaucratic under her rule. The adoption of “king” as her royal title is more of a convenience than an attempt to make radical statements or changes.
Thompson’s comments will hopefully clarify another mystery surrounding Love and Thunder, for a character who has easily adopted Thor’s role. Despite these developments, it remains unknown how Valkyrie’s role will affect her relationship with Thor, no matter what her title may be. As Thompson has indicated, Valkyrie isn’t too happy being the king.
As Thor: Love and Thunder is set to release on July 8, audiences can expect to see the “king” of New Asgard in action soon.
About Thor: Love and Thunder
Thor: Love and Thunder is a MCU movie and the fourth installation in the Thor series. It is directed by Ragnarok’s director, Taika Waititi, and will show Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman reprising their roles as Thor Odinson and Dr. Jane Foster.
The movie will be based on The Mighty Thor comics in which Thor Odinson loses the ability to lift Mjolnir, and Jane Foster takes on the role of Mighty Thor. After the events of Avengers: Endgame, Thor teams up with The Guardians of the Galaxy for a short time, leaving Valkyrie as the ruler of New Asgard. But Thor returns to team up with Korg, Valkyrie and Jane’s Mighty Thor to take down Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale) – before he takes out all the gods in existence.
Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson return for Watiti’s second go, while Russell Crowe and Natalie Portaman join Taika’s project for the first time. The movie is out on July 8, 2022.
