Thinking about my childhood, I can pinpoint some of my favorite moments sitting in front of the television, watching cartoons and animated shows, till my mom asked me to unglue my face from the screen. She still asks me to do that sometimes for old times’ sake, and what a nostalgic hit that is – just like it is when some of my favorite childhood characters return.
Nickelodeon announced an animated film featuring the most dangerous adventure of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in 2020. Since then, the film has added an ensemble cast, including Jackie Chan, Seth Rogen, Post Malone, Ice Cube, John Cena, Giancarlo Esposito, and more.
Paramount Pictures dropped the teaser trailer for the film in March 2023, teasing how Donatello, Michaelangelo, Raphael, and Leonardo come to the surface world looking for a quest to prove themselves. With the help of their human friend April O’Neill, they do just that, facing a mysterious crime syndicate and an army of mutants.
Though the film is not due in theaters till the latter half of the year, an unfinished cut of the film was shown at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. The film was primarily complete with a soundtrack, excuse a few unfinished animated frames, but it did what it needed to reignite the hype of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles before its release.
Audiences who were lucky enough to view the film’s first screening at the festival have commended it for its spot-on references and surprising plot. I can give you a taste of the unparalleled nostalgic euphoria they must have felt via a few tweets below:

Cant really form coherent thought after that, but imagine giving a Twitter shitposter millions to make a hard-PG13 TMNT film (mean it as a compliment). Sent my autistic head into a spiral with how many suprises and nice sketchy animation there is. Cant wait for more pic.twitter.com/YR0fS2pzsA
Just saw an unfinished cut of TMNT: MUTANT MAYHEM and had soooooo much fun

Could watch these characters hang out for hours and hours. 2 ATCQ needle drops made me happy
I came out of the session of #TMNT mutant mayhem . Graphically, it's a great success, with a very pronounced style that, despite some overly detailed shots, comes across perfectly. A future gem of animation from @paramount and @Nickelodeon and cool @mikrosanimation Love it ! pic.twitter.com/edzN9FGaO9

Cowabunga! #mutantmayhem is action packed, hilarious, colorful and overall just a ton of fun. Easily one of the best iterations since #TeenageMutantNinjaTurtles 1990 pic.twitter.com/cioNnfx2UT

The crowd's reaction shows the love for the movie and Jeff Rowe 👇 #AnnecyFestival pic.twitter.com/bOLbQUo8iz
Jeff Rowe, who is making his debut with the animated film as a director, stepped out for a bow as the crowd gave the film a six-minute standing ovation. Later in an interview with The Wrap, the filmmaker shared his feelings on the stage:
Being in the room and feeling all the reactions and hearing all the laughter was amazing, but what really stood out to me was to see our movie received and appreciated in that way by a lot of people who really love and care about animation.
Based on the early reactions, the film’s new style and take on the old stories of the Turtle brothers is about to be a huge hit. Keep a look out for more material on the film on Cine Dope till it finally premieres globally on August 2, 2023.
