Apple TV+’s popular comedy-drama Ted Lasso has referenced many real-life events in and out of the sports world. In season 3, they introduced a new recruit for AFC Richmond, Zava, who was based on the very real Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimović.
Zava was disappointed with his new team’s performance in the Premier League, and he quit the world of football to be closer to his family and start an avocado farm. At their game against West Ham United, he even sent a good luck gift as one giant avocado, like an as-big-as-a-football giant, which is hilariously commendable.
Zava’s inspiration, Zlatan Ibrahimović, recently announced his own retirement. In a comical congratulatory message, Ted Lasso’s AFC Richmond Twitter page sent him best wishes and a whole lot of luck for his avocado farm. The gag was a funny reference to Zava’s reason for retiring, but it also served as a nice farewell to the talented football star.
I am tagging the tweet below for you to see it yourself:
Ted Lasso wrapped up season 3 and potentially the entire series as the titular character said goodbye to AFC Richmond and returned to the States to be with his family. Jason Sudeikis has maintained that Lasso’s story will not continue, but Brendan Hunt has given us hope that there’s still a chance for some sort of continuation.
Though Lasso’s story is complete, the show can carry on with spinoffs, and we have a plethora of central characters for any new shows. A spinoff based on Jamie and Sam sounds just as good as one about Rebecca or Keeley – but if the show were to continue, what would season 4 follow?
Brett Goldstein’s Roy Kent succeeds Lasso as the head coach of AFC Richmond, and season 4 could potentially view his leadership and struggles in handling the team after its rise with Beard and Nate on his side.
For now, though the show’s creators keep saying, “never say never,” we have no news from Apple TV+ about Ted Lasso’s future. I’m signing off with a huge congratulations to Zlatan Ibrahimović on his retirement – as big as Zava’s avocados. Stay tuned to Cine Dope for the latest news!
