Season 3 of Ted Lasso began with more focus on the imperfections of the titular character. On the other hand, Nate has now developed into the show’s villain. He is the coach of the opposing team owned by Rupert Mannion, and his animosity towards Ted is plain as water.
Season 3 of Ted Lasso has Nate donning the role of the show’s antagonist. Actor Nick Mohammed has attributed a possible redemption arc for his character to the audience. However, sticking to the highly positive nature of the show, Nate shall indeed be redeemed.
What is Nate’s position in Ted Lasso Season 3?
In Ted Lasso S3, Nathan Shelley, popularly known as Nate, is the head coach at West Ham United, owned by Rebecca Welton’s ex-husband and competitor to AFC Richmond. Nate has developed into a typical villain, clad in black, reprimanding his players and insulting Ted publicly.
Season 3 of Ted Lasso delves into more of the titular character’s problems. Nate has a more prominent role as the antagonist of the season, and the creators have changed his appearance to match his new position. Clad in black and wearing a typical villain’s look, Nate now holds meetings in dark closed rooms that resemble dungeons.
Ted has taken up his new position as the coach of the opposing team, owned by Rupert Mannion. Rupert is a very unpopular character, and Rebecca, in particular, badly wishes to beat him at his own game. With a new Premier League coming up, West Ham United is expected to be among the top four, while AFC Richmond has again been predicted to take the last spot.
Season 2 showed more of Nate’s insecurities and the issues he has. We had seen his problems against Ted, and Ted had confronted him about it at the end of the season. Due to the lack of confidence and prolonged feeling of neglect, his behavior has changed much from before. In Season 3, he constantly acts out, with his players often bearing the brunt of it.
He doesn’t miss his chance to berate Ted on national television and insults him publically. In Season 2, he had also been the one to leak information regarding Ted’s anxiety attacks. The animosity he has towards Ted is visible to everyone.
Will Ted Lasso Season 3 Redeem Coach Nate?
Season 3 of Ted Lasso has Nate on the dark side with a drastic appearance and personality change. Actor Nick Mohammed says the possibility of his character being redeemed in the show is up to the audience. However, characteristic of the show, the chances of redemption are high.
From the once lovable kit-man turned assistant coach of AFC Richmond to a cold-hearted head coach of West Ham United, Nate has had the most dramatic and unexpected makeovers in Ted Lasso. With Season 3 giving a villain arc to his character, the question that has arisen in all our minds is this: Will Nate’s character be redeemed in the show?
In an interview with Deadline soon after the premiere of Ted Lasso Season 3, the actor responded to the question! Nick Mohammed, who plays Nate on-screen, commented that the notion of Nate being redeemed is “like everything in Ted Lasso, not so clear-cut” and that it was up to the audience whether we forgave him or not for his actions.
There’s a lot of anticipation as to whether Nate is getting this redemption arc and all I’ll say is that it’s not up to me or even the writers. I think it’s more about the audience and their capacity for forgiveness. To some people. Nate’s betrayal at the end of Season 2 was the straw that broke the camel’s back and there’s no going back because he can’t re-write history. He did and said those things. Let’s say for the sake of argument he apologizes, gets on his knees and begs for forgiveness. He still did it. There is an element of whether the onus is on the person to forgive Nate rather than for Nate’s forgiveness to be absolute. Like everything with Ted Lasso, it’s not so clear-cut in that way, it’s more nuanced. It’s not that he is definitely redeemed or not, there’s a blurred line there.

There is a lot of tension in Season 3 with Nate’s shocking detestable nature and his enmity for Ted. The show has loudly proclaimed him a villain with his actions, relationships, and appearances. But at the center, Ted Lasso is a feel-good series that emphasizes optimism and good endings. For the show to remain on this track, Nate will indeed be redeemed in the show.
The premiere of Season 3 already showed Nate rethinking the decisions that brought him to his current position. His recent behavior also does not indicate a lasting position for him as the manager. But, with how much effort has been put into showcasing Nate as an antagonist, we can only expect his moral side to dip even lower before he eventually begins his journey of redemption.
