Football has long since been a male-dominated field in my mind. Until Ted Lasso changed that opinion of the football world for me.
Since Season 1, the show has had women at the front of the sports comedy-drama, and Season 2 is just truer in that aspect. One of the developers of the award-winning drama is Jason Sudeikis, who also plays the titular character.
Ted Lasso in the show is a good man, with traits such as optimism, kindness, caring, and a staunch believer in equality, which make him lovable and so close to our hearts. He wormed into the hearts of the team members and others the same way.
Ted Lasso revolves around the lives of the people associated with AFC Richmond, a football team. Season 1 features Ted’s relentless optimism to coach the British team, while Season 2 delves into the strengths and vulnerabilities of the people involved.
Ted Lasso Season 1 Recap
Season 1 of Ted Lasso sees the titular character’s ability to reach people across the culture and language divide. Ted Lasso is able to create several creative solutions for the problems faced by the team he is coaching and brings the team to a great position.
Ted Lasso is an American football coach brought to the UK to coach Rebecca Welton’s team after a video of his success at a Championship went viral. However, Welton brings him with the objective of sabotaging the team as revenge against her ex-husband.
Ted has difficulty adjusting to the sharp change in culture and environment, and everybody dislikes him. However, with his relentless optimism and genuine friendliness, he is able to win over them.
As Ted settles into coaching AFC Richmond, Rebecca begins her plan to destroy the team. However, it fails, and Ted’s attempts to better the team continue. Nate, the team’s kit man, is able to give good advice to Ted for the same. Ted’s optimism brings out a better person in Roy Kent, the team’s veteran player.
In Rebecca’s moment of distress at her ex-husband, Ted is able to comfort her, and they become friends. Ted’s wife and son come to meet him, but she breaks the relationship with him. He is able to move on with the help of the guys around him.
Jamie Tartt, the team’s star player, is still not a team player, and thus Ted benches him. This decision is met with much opposition from their fans. However, Ted motivates all the other players to believe in themselves, and they win their first game.
Danny Rojas returns from an injury to the team. However, he is injured almost immediately again, and Ted realizes that the team believes in a team curse. He gets each player to sacrifice a precious item and is able to break the curse. In the process, Tartt also opens up and becomes a better person.
Rebecca, seeing how good the team is getting, trades Jamie away. But Ted is able to use Nate’s honesty and pep talk skills to motivate the players to win another game.
With the help of the Diamond Dogs, the people who helped Ted over his divorce, he is able to solve romantic issues between Roy and Keeley, the club’s marketing and PR manager, who is also Jamie’s ex.
Ted helps Rebecca get her ex-husband away from the team and keeps standing up for her. Keeley discovers Rebecca’s betrayals, and the latter finally comes clean to Ted. Ted being the perfect guy he is, immediately forgives her.
Ted has to bench Roy due to his slowing down the rest of the team, and Keeley helps the latter cope with this decision. In a crucial game for the team’s future in the Premier League, Roy is able to battle Jamie and successfully prevent him from scoring. However, he is injured and knows his football career has ended. The audience gives him a heroic sent-off, though.
The team is winning the match, but in a sudden change of events, Jamie helps score again, and the team loses out of the competition. Ted gives the perfect pep talk to his team and even expresses his pride in Jamie making the right pass during the match to him.
Ted disastrously, as usual, shares a cup of tea with Rebecca, and they plan to win next season to be back in the League.
Ted Lasso Season 2 Recap
In contrast to Season 1 of Ted Lasso, Season 2 focuses on the negatives of Ted’s character and the limitations of his wisdom and expertise. There is a greater focus on other characters, including the female characters and their abilities and lives.
Season 2 of Ted Lasso begins with the shocking death of the team mascot, Earl Greyhound, by Dani Rojas’ errant penalty kick. His game starts suffering badly, and this just adds to the stress on the team as they keep tieing up in games.
A sports psychologist, Dr. Sharon Fieldstone, is brought in to help Dani, and we see how she is able to help the team in areas where Ted was not able to.
Rebecca has begun dating and has a double date with Keeley and Roy. Roy makes Rebecca realize she is worth more than the “fine” guy she is currently seeing.
Jamie Tartt gets voted off the dating show he was in, and his honest reply to the media regarding dating show strategies makes him unpopular. Ted takes him back into the team after he thinks about how bad Jamie’s father is.
On Keeley’s encouragement, Roy gets into sports commenting, which he is passionate about. Jamie has trouble being accepted back by his teammates, prompting Ted Lasso to introduce his mean alter-ego, Led Tasso. This unites the team against Led rather than Jamie. In a surprising turn of events protesting against Dubai Air, Jamie is able to prove his loyalty to the team and earns back a place.
The team has finally broken its string of ties with a loss. As Christmas arrives, the show focuses on how they are able to enjoy themselves despite their loneliness by being with each other. Nate, the assistant coach, builds up confidence finally with the help of Rebecca and Keeley.
Roy, one of the coaches of AFC Richmond, still has issues with Jamie, but they are resolved between them. During a match, Ted experiences anxiety attacks similar to those he experienced during his divorce and finally sees Dr. Sharon despite his apprehensiveness towards therapy. Nathan’s leadership leads the team to victory in the match.
Nate has issues with his father’s approval, and this causes him to misbehave with the team sometimes. Ted finally opens up to Dr. Sharon. In the aftermath of an accident, Sharon does the same to Ted.
Rebecca and Sam have been texting in Bantr for a long time without knowing each other’s identities. They finally meet face-to-face and though it takes some time, get together. Jamie finally confronts his dad regarding his demeaning behavior towards him and the team, and the team loses again.
We get an episode that goes into the life of Coach Beard. After many antics and unexpected turns in the story, he realizes that Jane is the love of his life, and he reunites with her.
Rebecca’s dad passes away, and the emotions make her realize she is not ready for a relationship yet. Ted has an anxiety attack at the funeral, and he hashes out his relationship with his father to Dr. Sharon. Rebecca also hashes out her hatred for her father.
News of Ted’s anxiety attack spread, and he is questioned about his ability to manage a team. However, his team and friends stand by his side throughout. Keeley begins her PR firm while Sam stays and opens his authentic Nigerian restaurant.
The team advances to the Premier League. Nate and Ted confront each other about what they think of each other. We see Nate’s insecurities, and Nate leaves at the end of the season to manage West Ham United for the next season.
