Taron Egerton has suggested that his portrayal of Gary “Eggsy” Unwin in Kingsman 3 may be his last.
Based on the comics by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons, the Kingsman franchise commenced with the critically acclaimed Kingsman: The Secret Service in 2014.
The director of the series, Mathew Vaughn, released a sequel in 2017 titled Kingsman: The Golden Circle, followed by the prequel set in World War I, The King’s Man, in 2021.
While plans were initially made to commence production on the third installment in 2019, ongoing delays have caused the project to be repeatedly postponed.
In a recent Collider interview, Egerton discusses his comeback to the movie series that brought him fame. He hints at having some ideas for Kingsman 3 that he wishes to propose to Vaughn.
Moreover, he expresses his desire to have Colin Firth reprise his role as Eggsy’s guide, Harry Hart. You can find his full statements below:
Yeah, I mean, I have an idea for Kingsman. I have my own idea that I would like to pitch to Matthew, and I think that will be happening soon but he has the wheels in motion on a big idea of his own. So who knows, you know? Who knows where it will land? But he has every intention of making it, and I have every intention of playing Eggsy one more time. That was always what I thought I was committed to doing. It’s the role that made my name, so I suppose, in a way, I just want it to be absolutely right if we do it again, and I want the story to do justice to the part that really changed my life. I want it to be a fitting ending. And I would, obviously, really hope that Colin [Firth] would come back for at least a part of it, and who knows? We’ll have to see, but we are planning to talk about it, actually, the next time we see one another, so who knows? Watch this space. But, you know, he’s certainly not backing off the idea.
Taron Egerton
Although Egerton had acted in many roles, it was Kingsman: The Secret Service that catapulted him to stardom. By playing his character, a rebellious underdog turned top-notch spy, Egerton not only helped himself but also played a pivotal role in the triumph of the burgeoning spy franchise.
Eggsy’s character brought back a playful and thrilling vibe to the spy genre, which had grown too serious over the years.
As a result, Egerton’s Eggsy deservedly earned his place alongside the likes of famous spies like James Bond and Jason Bourne.
As people eagerly await Egerton’s comeback in Kingsman 3, his latest statements have sparked speculation about the franchise’s future after his exit.
Vaughn has been vocal about his aspirations to broaden the scope of the Kingsman series beyond the core films and has already taken a stab at it with the franchise’s initial prequel movie.
Even though The King’s Man didn’t attain the same level of critical acclaim or financial prosperity as its predecessor, it demonstrated numerous possibilities to delve into within the franchise’s intricately crafted movie universe.
The franchise will probably shift its attention to the upcoming Statesman spinoff series following Eggsy’s last appearance in Kingsman 3.
The series is set to feature familiar faces such as Channing Tatum, Jeff Bridges, and Halle Berry, reprising their roles from Kingsman: The Golden Circle, and will center on the American counterparts of the Kingsman.
This spinoff could pave the way for more stories in the franchise. Regardless of what happens, fans will be sad to bid farewell to Egerton’s character after his final performance in Kingsman 3.
