After hitting tvN in 2020, Lee Dong-Wook’s Lee Yeon didn’t only steal Nam Ji-Ah’s heart but all of ours too. The show received a speedy renewal, and season 2, Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938, premiered on the network on May 6, 2023.
Before you resume viewing the latest chapter in the Korean supernatural drama, I’d like to give you a refresher course for all the creatures and characters you saw in season 1 and who will be returning in season 2. And as a bonus, I’ll also add an extra section welcoming the new main cast of Tale of the Nine-Tailed!
1. It’s Brit– Sorry; It’s Lee Yeon, B****!
Apologies, but I guess the excitement got to me. Lee Dong-Wook, who you remember as the Reaper in the other hit K-Drama Goblin, will reprise the lead role in Tale of the Nine-Tailed season 2. In the season 1 finale, Lee Yeon sacrificed himself to take down the Imoogi, but after six months, Nam Ji-Ah and Lee Rang find a way to get him back.
Lee Rang sacrifices himself to the Great King Odo to have his brother back, ensuring Ji-Ah doesn’t go against his last wish. Lee Yeon returns, and while everyone believes he is human, the final scene of season 1’s last episode reveals he is still the Gumiho he always was.
The showrunners have already confirmed that Lee Yeon will go back to the past in Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938, to the year, you guessed it, 1938. There, he will have to find a way back to the present and will obviously be met with obstacles.
2. Time Travel Means Dead Characters Have A Skewed Revival
Lee Rang may have already been reincarnated into a young boy with poor bicycle skills, but that doesn’t mean we won’t see Kim Bum in Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938. Because of the time-traveling plot, Lee Yeon will soon bump into his younger brother in the past, and we will have another opportunity to see Kim Bum in vintage clothes. Activate heart-eyes!
The Ghost Doctor actor will revive his role as the half-blood Gumiho, and we will have the opportunity to see the brothers once again rehashing their complicated relationship burdened with time-travel antics.
3. Afterlife Immigration Office’s Power Couple
The season 2 premiere will pick up the story after four months since season 1 finale. Kim Jung-Nan and Ahn Gil-Kang will revive their roles as Afterlife Immigration Office employees Taluipa and Hyunuiong. In fact, it was Taluipa who is responsible for Lee Yeon going back in the past!
A masked thief steals the guardian stone that protects the evil spirits of the River of Dead from spilling into the human world. Taluipa, who grants Lee Yeon a wish in exchange for him accepting his previous job, sends the hunter-fox to retrieve the said stone.
4. Who’s the New Co-Hunter and Sunwoo Ilbo Reporter?
Hwang Hee and Kim Yong-ji are returning to the second season of the fantasy K-drama with new roles. The former will play a native fox who will accompany our titular character on a tough hunt sometime in Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938. The latter of the two will transform into Sunwoo Eun-Ho, a reporter who is spotted working at the Sunwoo Ilbo.
Another returning cast member is Kim Soo-jin, but she will revive her role of the Snail Bride/Bok Hye-ja from season 1.
5. Welcome to the New and Bold
The new season of Tale of the Nine-Tailed obviously will sport quite a few new characters since the setting is far from the present. While I won’t touch upon all the supporting and other cast members, I will briefly introduce you to the two new main additions to the show.
Kim So-Yeon, who you may remember from Happy Home and Prosecutor Princess, will star in the latest season as Ryu Hong-joo, a former Western Mountain god who currently owns Myoyeongak, the second-best place to eat in Gyeongseong.
While calling her Lee Yeon’s old flame might be an exaggeration, she did propose to him once. Of course, the Gumiho, who only ever had eyes for Yi Ah-eum, rejected her, but she still feels for him and will be deeply entangled with him in season 2.
Ryu Kyung-soo, who you know from Confession and Itaewon Class, joins the cast of Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938 and will play Cheon Moo-young. Moo-Young is a longtime friend of Lee Yeon and Hong-joo and a former northern mountain god who believes every soul need saving, even the dead.
According to sources, he is the masked thief who stole the River of Dead’s guardian stone, leading to Lee Yeon’s latest hunt in the season 2 premiere.
The first episode of Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938 is out now, and new episodes will be out every Saturday and Sunday on tvN. Stay tuned to Cine Dope for more!
