Have you ever tried to find a pearl in a sea of shells? Sounds like a difficult task, but not impossible. Similarly, Monster Hunter Wilds has a tricky mission for you, and we’re here to help you complete it.
As part of the “Dareel’s Research Report” side quest, you’ll need to capture a Tracktail Lizard, an adorable endemic life form, to help the Windward Plains base camp research team. This guide will show you both where to find and how to catch the tracktail lizards in Monster Hunter Wilds.
1. Where to Find Tracktail Lizards in Monster Hunter Wilds?

In Monster Hunter Wilds, as part of the “Dareel’s Research Report” quest, you’ll need to capture a Tracktail Lizard. To find one, head to the Windward Plains, around water sources or oases.
The most reliable spawn point is the banks of the Oasis in Area 13. For quick access, set up a Pop-Up Camp at the Oasis or create a waypoint on the map to have your Seikret take you there.
- Tracktail Lizards can be found in several locations, including Area 11 of the Windward Plains near the rocky pillars, the oasis in Area 13, and the sand dunes.
- Focus on the eastern dunes, and explore the area on foot or by riding until you spot one. Tracktail lizards are rare and more active during the day, so patience is the key.
- In Area 13, enter the cave south of the Oasis and navigate through its paths to find materials, fishing spots, and campgrounds. You’ll find yourself two Tracktail Lizards.
- Head east of the oasis and north towards Area 16 for the cave exit point, where you’ll find two Tracktail Lizards too.
2. How to Catch Tracktail Lizards in Monster Hunter Wilds?

These slender, blue, meerkat-like lizards are easy to recognize due to their long tails, which they use to prop themselves up when startled.
Be careful though- if you get too close, they’ll run away and burrow into the sand. To catch the Tracktail Lizard:
- Equip your capture net from the item bar.
- Sneak up on the lizard and carefully aim with your slinger.
- When the aiming box turns orange, fire the net with your slinger and catch the lizard.
- Just remember to use L2/LT instead of the usual square/X button to successfully capture the Lizard.
- If you miss, the Lizard will flee, and you’ll need to rejoin the lobby to reset the lizards.
Completing this quest will unlock another side quest, Samin’s Research Report, which tasks you with tracking down a dapperwing.
After capturing the Tracktail Lizard, return it to Dareel to earn your rewards, which include 10 honey and 50 Guild Points.
Although the rewards may not be overly generous, completing this quest sets the stage for capturing other endemic life forms in Monster Hunter Wilds.
Are you ready to begin your monster hunting journey?
