Makoto Shinkai’s anime film Suzume no Tojimari has earned 11.35 billion yen (about 87 million USD) and has sold over 8.51 million tickets as of January 3. The film is now the 30th highest grossing of all time in Japan and has continued to climb the box office charts since its premiere on November 11.
The film however, still ranks #2 in the weekend charts, following The First Slam Dunk.
Suzume has already surpassed the Detective Conan film, and the final Evangelion film at the box office. The only films that have earned more in Japan are Demon Slayer, five Ghibli films, Shinkai’s own last two films, One Piece Film Red, and Jujustsu Kaisen 0.
The film has been ranked #3 in the top 10 highest-grossing domestic films in Japan for 2022 with 10 billion yen (about 75.4 million USD) as of December 25.
In its opening week, Suzume premiered at #1 on November 11, 2022 and sold 1.33 million tickets in its first three days. The film sold 38.7% more tickets and earned 47.4% more in the same timeframe than Shinkai’s acclaimed Your Name.
The Suzume film was directed by Shinkai, who also penned the screenplay and has also been credited with the original story. Masayoshi Tanaka served as the character designer and Kenichi Tsuchiya as the animation director. Takumi Tanji was in charge of art direction and CoMix Wave Films manged the animation production.
About Suzume no Tojimari
Suzume no Tojimari is an anime film by Makoto Shinkai. It premiered on November 11, 2022. A novel adaptation was released in August 2022, also written by Shinkai.
The film focuses on Suzume, a 17-year-old girl who meets a young man looking for a door. Suzume finds a strange door among the ruins and opens it, but due to it many doors start opening around Japan, causing disasters. Now, Suzume has to close all of them to save Japan.
