The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is ending with season five, which is currently airing on Prime Video and will release its last episode in the final week of May. What I have to talk about doesn’t concern the titular character, but rather her closest friend who has stuck with her for all these seasons, pun intended.
In episode 2 of the current season, the show explained in a flash forward that Midge and Susie are no longer friends and that the former will be a successful Hollywood manager in the future. Their impending estrangement and Susie’s new flash job have led fans to hold on to some hope for the character getting a spinoff series at Prime Video.
Speaking to The Wrap, Alex Borstein, who plays Midge’s manager-cum-best-friend in the comedy-drama, discusses whether The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel creator will give her character her own spinoff. While she has no news on the matter, she did state her readiness to be involved in such a project. Read her full statement below:
Whatever Amy Sherman-Palladino wants to do — and if I am invited to the party — I am there. I’m there early, and I will be the last guest to leave. I really, I just feel very safe, and I really trust her. She creates these universes that consistently expand, and I don’t know how she does it.
You cannot get bored because it’s constantly expanding and changing, and like the universe, there’s enough dark matter to keep you surprised and wondering and explore and yeah. If Amy Sherman-Palladino were to say, ‘Let’s explore Susie more,’ I would absolutely trust her that there’s something worth telling.
The show’s success and popularity among its viewers are owed to the unlimited talent of its cast and the witty and amusing dialogue supporting the satisfying storytelling. Fans were disappointed to hear of the show’s end after season 5, but the creator understands the importance of ending the story on her own terms and not “overstaying their welcome.”
While the showrunner has stated that it is too early for any spinoffs or related follow-ups on Maisel or any of the characters, this new development could be a fresh hope for fans.
For now, we simply don’t know if Prime Video or Amy Sherman-Palladino will move forward with Susie’s spinoff – but we carry the same hope that Alex Borstein holds. Only two episodes are left in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, so keep watching the show and stay tuned to Cine Dope for more news.
