Superman & Lois introduced Clark’s biggest struggles from his teen years by having Jordan develop super hearing. The recent episode (S01E07) shows how much trouble Jordan is having with his new super-hearing abilities.
Similar to what Clark Kent went through in both Man of Steel and Smallville, it was a difficult challenge for Jordan Kent to learn how to control it.
He spends most of the episode just trying to get the hang of his new power so that he can live a normal life in a noisy world.
When this ability is first triggered, Jordan doesn’t know how to turn it off. He’s constantly hearing all types of sounds, which are amplified due to his enhanced eardrums.
Jordan doesn’t leave his house and has his headphones on to shut out all the noise. It wasn’t until he focused on Sarah’s voice that he was able to control it.
Similarly, Smallville’s Clark spends an episode learning how to master it, and it kicks in to compensate for when Clark was temporarily blind.
In Man of Steel, a young Clark develops his heat and x-ray vision along with super hearing. He locks himself in a room until his mother helps him to focus on her voice and block the others out.
In an interview with CBR, Superman & Lois showrunner Todd Helbing teased what’s in store for Jordan, the Kent family, and the rest of Smallville’s citizens.
He talked about Jordan’s struggle with his super strength and super hearing and how it would complicate things for him.
“There’s a pain quotient that’s associated with it. I mean, if you can imagine hearing every sound in the world at once, that would give you a migraine like you’ve never had before. So he has to deal with that.
But also, there’s this responsibility, this thing that Clark keeps telling him, is, ‘You have a responsibility. You have a responsibility. These powers, they change your life.’ And one of them, now, is how do you use those powers responsibly?
If you have super hearing, what could you be listening for? I mean, it’s interesting because we set that up in Episode 3 when the kids are asking about it, and now Jordan is gonna have that. So how is he going to deal with it?”
The CW had recently announced the show’s return for the second half of Season 1 on May 18. The series has been on a brief hiatus due to a COVID-related production interruption earlier this season.
Superman & Lois focuses on a different aspect of Superman’s life. After years of facing supervillains, Clark Kent starts a new journey with Lois Lane as they take on one of the greatest challenges ever—dealing with being working parents.
Clark and Lois worry about their sons, Jonathan and Jordan, inheriting their father’s Kryptonian superpowers as they grow older.
Superman & Lois airs on The CW on Tuesday nights at 9 pm ET. Season 1 will consist of 15 episodes, with the series finale set for August 17, 2021.
