Superman & Lois, which premiered yesterday, had many surprises waiting for viewers. But the one that shocked them the most was the passing of Clark Kent’s mother, Martha. The pilot episode, which has received rave reviews with its release, is a wonderful beginning to the series.
The episode’s ending also revealed The Stranger’s identity and that one of Kent and Lois’s twin sons have superpowers, thus highlighting a different side of Superman’s narrative right off the bat.
Clark and Lois, who are based in Metropolis, are struck with the news of Martha’s death and move back into Kent’s hometown of Smallville. Before its release, the show had also confirmed Pa Kent’s death, setting the episode up for emotional setbacks and sorrow. Clark, who is fired from the Daily Planet right before his mother’s passing, is given all the more reason to move back home.
However, as difficult as the pilot could’ve been for the characters, it is all a part of the bigger picture. Martha’s death becomes significant for the plot, as with her absence, Smallville falls into ruin and faces economic recession. Furthermore, Kyle Cushing, Lana Lang’s husband, treats Kent with utter disregard for being a small-town boy who left the nest to move to the city and never looked back.
Giving a voice to the town’s lost potential, the local fire chief seems to be the other factor in Kent’s life weighing down on him. Additionally, Lois, who is worried about their children, also plays a hand at guilt-tripping Clark.
Martha’s death then makes sense as it is the last straw that brings Clark to his lowest point, and it’ll be interesting to see how he gets back on his feet while balancing a healthy work and home life.
Following his debut in Supergirl, Tyler Hoechlin reprises his role as Superman in his standalone Arrowverse show, which might as well become a contender of The Flash. Superman & Lois airs on the CW with new episodes every week.
