The pilot of Superman & Lois premiered on The CW on February 23 and swiftly set up the backdrop of the new Superman multiverse.
We saw many notable characters in the episode, including the primary antagonist, The Stranger. However, there is one more antagonist who, though already established as an important name in the game, is yet to be shown to us—Morgan Edge.
Morgan Edge was a principal antagonist in the third season of Supergirl, where he ends up behind bars for his crimes of lead poisoning and the attempted murder of Lena Luthor. The pilot of Superman & Lois tells that he has bought out the news organization Lois and Clark work for, and has also involved himself in Smallville in multiple ways.
So who exactly is Morgan Edge in Superman & Lois, and what is his history in the Arrowverse? Keep reading to find out.
1. Morgan Edge and The Daily Planet
Before the show premiered, we already knew of Edge from the plot synopsis. The antagonist is described as “an intelligent, eloquent and impassioned self-made mogul whose innate ability to motivate is the means to his success and others’ demise”.
Now, the show has already told us plenty more about this not-so-new character in the first episode.
Morgan Edge is shown to have bought out the newspaper where Lois and Superman/Clark work as journalists, The Daily Planet.
Lois is bitter about the fact that this has taken the newspaper away from human interest stories and towards only caring about click-throughs.
We also see that layoffs seem to have become common at The Daily Planet since Edge’s takeover. Lois and Clark walk into the office and see a man who’s just been fired, and Clark himself gets fired shortly after.
2. What’s Morgan Edge up to in Superman’s Hometown of Smallville?
Less than halfway into the first episode, the Kents reach Smallville following the death of Martha Kent, Clark’s mother.
The Kents soon interact with the Cushing family—Lana Lang Cushing (local loan officer and Clark’s high school flame), her husband Kyle Cushing, and their daughters Sarah and Sophie.
Lana reveals that Morgan Edge is planning to retrofit local coal mines to produce alternative energies, and Kyle adds that this will bring work to a lot of people. However, Lois and Clark are not convinced.
This leads Kyle and Lois into a heated exchange that highlights their differences in opinion about Edge. Lois immediately says that Edge ruins everything he touches, preys on struggling communities, busts up unions, and barely pays a living wage. Kyle, after showing his disdain for those who grow up in small towns and move away, says that he feels people like Edge look at Smallville and see the future. It is clear that Kyle supports Edge and his agenda.
Lois and Clark later visit Lana at the bank where she works in order to discuss the finances of the Kent farm left behind by Martha. Lana tells them about the reverse mortgages the bank offered to senior citizens five years ago, and how Martha mortgaged half the farm to generously help a struggling family.
This perks up Lois’ journalistic radar—she knows that the bank wouldn’t merely offer these mortgages out of generosity and that there has to be a catch. She finds out that shortly before the mortgages were offered, the bank was secretly acquired by a company called Galaxy Holdings, whose majority shareholder is—drumroll please—Morgan Edge!
All of this makes it amply clear that Edge has a keen interest in Smallville. We don’t know his exact agenda yet, but considering what we already know about him, it can’t be good!
3. Morgan Edge’s History in the Arrowverse
Morgan Edge was the principal antagonist in the third season of Supergirl, where he ends up behind bars for his crimes of lead poisoning and the attempted murder of Lena Luthor. Lena Luthor is a billionaire businesswoman, who is the estranged half-sister of legendary villain Lex Luthor, and also a close friend of Superman’s cousin Kara Zor-El a.k.a. Supergirl.
However, in Superman & Lois, we are all set to see a slightly different iteration of Edge. For starters, the role, which was originally played by Adrian Pasdar, has been recast for unknown reasons. The character of Morgan Edge is now played by Adam Rayner, who is known for portraying the protagonist Bassam “Barry” Al-Fayeed in the FX political drama Tyrant.
It’s now time to wait and see what kind of personality the showrunners of Superman & Lois have written for Morgan Edge, and I, for one, am excited as heck!
