Released on July 29, 2022, DC League of Super-Pets may have scored the top spot in the box office this weekend with #23 million collected in two days, but the following news followed the rank with a bruising hit. DC League of Super-Pets has failed to even outdo Pixar’s recent bomb at the box office, Toy Story spinoff Lightyear.
DC’s most recent animation, DC League of Super-Pets, followed the story of a team of super-pets owned by the heroes of the Justice League who unite to save their masters from the evil Lex Luthor’s captivity.
Dwayne Johnson voiced Krypto, Superman’s dog, and Kevin Hart voiced Ace, Batman’s hound. Other actors also starring in the film are John Krasinski, Kate McKinnon, Vanessa Bryer, Keanu Reeves, Diego Luna, Marc Maron, Olivia Wilde, Jameela Jamil, and Natasha Lyonne.
The film was scheduled to release in 2020, but Disney decided to wait until the COVID-19 restrictions were lifted, as they didn’t want to waste the animated film’s budget by simply releasing it on streaming platforms. But after Sonic the Hedgehog saw a tremendous success, closely followed by Minions: The Rise of Gru, WB decided it was the right time to release the film.
But Pixar faced a very disappointing run at the box office with Lightyear, the first production of the studio to come to theatres in two years. Now, according to Variety, DC League of Super-Pets has opened up with an even smaller collection despite scoring first place at this weekend’s box office.
The DC animated film opened with $23 million, and Lightyear opened with $51 million, though it is important to keep in mind that the former had a budget of $90 million, whereas the latter had a whopping budget of $200 million.
The film has a chance to revive itself in the coming weeks though it faces fierce competition from the Minions film, which is still in the Top 5.
The film has another three weeks to make up for the slow start since WB’s recent policy dictates a 45-day theatrical window for its movies before premiering on streaming platforms.
