Sucker Punch stars have now begun campaigning online to release Zack Snyder’s Director’s Cut of the movie. Following the success of #ReleaseTheSnyderCut, the director has been much discussed online and offline.
Snyder recently revealed in an interview that Sucker Punch’s theatrical cut was much different compared to the version he wanted to release, which has now sparked a buzz online for a second director’s cut release.
Some fans have started online campaigns to get Snyder’s original vision released. That endeavor has now caught the attention of some big names, including Sucker Punch stars Abbie Cornish and Jena Malone.
On Monday, Malone posted a tweet that simply read, “#ReleaseTheSnyderPunch,” with Cornish seconding the opinion on her Instagram story. It seems the movie’s actors want to see the original cut as badly as fans of the director. Check out the tweet here:
However, the chances of it happening seem very unlikely. Unlike the DCEU fandom, the audience for a movie like Sucker Punch is far less, which means the money and the effort required for its making are a controversial proposition.
Much like the theatrical version of Justice League, Sucker Punch was received poorly by viewers when it debuted in 2011. The film starred actress Emily Browning as “Babydoll,” a young woman committed at a mental institution after being wrongfully sentenced for murder.
In her attempts to escape, she befriends four other prisoners as they enter a level of fantasy where they face many bizarre experiences filled with action sequences. Sucker Punch was a box office failure and grossed a mere $82 million against its $89 million budget.
Despite Snyder’s recent spike in fame, the profitability of a director’s cut, irrespective of how different it might be, does not seem very high. If the cut was to be released, it would probably be far less thrilling than his cut of Justice League.
Since Sucker Punch came out a decade ago, the director’s cut would only call for reinstituting the scenes discarded from the theatrical version and some additional editing. Snyder has said that both versions will be very different from each other, which could be enough to produce the re-release. But until then, it remains to be seen whether this new campaign becomes as successful as its predecessor.
