The first three seasons of Succession took us on a wild ride as we watched the Roy siblings clawing their way past each other for the control of their father’s company, Waystar RoyCo.
Season 4 of the Emmy award-winning series is already off to a dramatic start, not that we expected any less. If you’re meticulously keeping up with the new episodes every week and episode 3 left you completely destroyed, don’t worry; we’re all in the same boat.
Now I’d hate to be the bearer of more bad news, but it looks like this season will be the end of the series as well.
The creator of Succession, Jesse Armstrong, confirmed that season 4 will be the final one. The Roy family’s story will conclude with this season and there are no plans for a season 5.
However, there is still some hope that we might see our favourite characters again, maybe in a different setting. Keep reading to find out more.
Why won’t there be a Succession S5?
Season 5 of Succession wasn’t cancelled; it was a collective decision made by the showrunners themselves to end the series after 4 seasons.
In an interview with The New Yorker, the creator of Succession, Jesse Armstrong, shared his thoughts on when he wanted to end the show. Here’s what he had to say:
You know, there’s a promise in the title of “Succession.” I’ve never thought this could go on forever. The end has always been kind of present in my mind. From Season 2, I’ve been trying to think: Is it the next one, or the one after that, or is it the one after that?
Jesse Armstrong
To me this seems like the best decision to make while the series is still on a high. The writers have already covered plenty about the characters’ lives, so it makes sense to conclude their stories now, especially after everything they’ve been through.
When the writers have a clear idea of what they want to convey through their show and exactly how long they want it to go on for, they avoid the risk of dragging it out for too long and losing the show’s charm.
When asked about how he pictured the ending of Succession going, Jesse Armstrong further added:
I got together with a few of my fellow-writers before we started the writing of Season 4, in about November, December, 2021, and I sort of said, “Look, I think this maybe should be it. But what do you think?” And we played out various scenarios: We could do a couple of short seasons, or two more seasons. Or we could go on for ages and turn the show into something rather different, and be a more rangy, freewheeling kind of fun show, where there would be good weeks and bad weeks. Or we could do something a bit more muscular and complete, and go out sort of strong. And that was definitely always my preference.
Jesse Armstrong
Can we expect spin-offs or other projects?
In the same New Yorker interview, Jesse Armstrong was asked about a possible reboot of the show later on. His response was:
I do think that this succession story that we were telling is complete. This is the muscular season to exhaust all our reserves of interest, and I think there’s some pain in all these characters that’s really strong. But the feeling that there could be something else in an allied world, or allied characters, or some of the same characters—that’s also strong in me.
Jesse Armstrong
Armstrong himself is open to spin-offs or maybe another season of Succession after a few more years.
This gives us hope that the Succession universe hasn’t come to end just yet and like us, the creator is also not ready to say goodbye to these beloved characters.
We’re all eagerly waiting to see what’s in store for us next. Nothing is confirmed yet, but hopefully it won’t be too long before we get an update.
What do we know about season 4?
Succession season 4 premiered on March 26, 2023. It picks up right after the events of the season 3 finale, after Logan reveals to his children that he has renegotiated his divorce agreement with Caroline and that they will no longer be able to take control of the company.
Here is the mid-season trailer for season 4, which was released on April 10, 2023.
There will be 10 episodes this season. Here is the schedule of their respective releases.
No. (in season) | Title | Release Date |
1 | “The Munsters” | March 26, 2023 |
2 | “Rehearsal” | April 2, 2023 |
3 | “Connor’s Wedding” | April 9, 2023 |
4 | “Honeymoon States” | April 16, 2023 |
5 | “Kill List” | April 23, 2023 |
6 | “Living+” | April 30, 2023 |

8 | TBA | May 14, 2023 |
9 | TBA | May 21, 2023 |
10 | TBA | May 28, 2023 |
We still have a long way to go before we say goodbye to this incredible series so let’s not worry about the end now.
I’m sure the writers have something great planned for the finale. Until then, make sure you’ve caught up with the latest episode of Succession, if you haven’t already.
