Climate change has been one of the most important topics under discussion for the past few years. The anime industry has tried to portray its impact through countless TV projects, including those with a post-apocalyptic setting.
On January 10, 2023, Studio 4°C announced that it will produce an animated film, tentatively titled ‘Future Kid Takara’. It will have global warming and climate change as the main theme.
This project is a part of the collaboration with JETRO (Japan External Trade Organization), in which several Kickstarter programs will be launched to produce new anime projects with five studios, including Studio 4°C.
The studio has also launched its crowdfunding campaign for ‘Future Kid Takara’, sharing concept art of the world and the main characters. For its initial funding tiers, it aims to create a fan community to share the progress and a 15-second video clip which would allow to bring in more investors.
The film is planned for a 2025 release. Just like the theme of the film, Studio 4°C is also trying to reduce carbon emissions during production. This refers to the Sixth Assessment Report of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
According to the report, the only way to reduce and limit global warming to 1.5°C is by acting fast on it. Future Kid Takara will be a family-oriented action film, taking an entertainment-based approach to the topic.
Yuta Sano, director of Berserk: The Golden Age Arc – Memorial Edition, will direct the film. Shinji Kimura (art director for Dorohedoro) is in charge of designing the characters and the world.
The human character designs have a retro vibe to them, quite similar to Osamu Tezuka’s popular works. Assuming that it will have a realistic plot, I would love to see this project come to fruition.
About Future Kid Takara(Tentative Title)
Future Kid Takara is an anime film project to be produced by Studio 4°C. It is planned to be a family-oriented action film that takes on the topic of global warming and climate change.
The initial plot of the story is about a boy Takara, who meets Sera, a girl who is time-warped into the year 2100. The two try to figure out the world that has succumbed to the effects of global warming.
