The Elder Gods in Mortal Kombat have been a well-kept secret in the games for more than two decades now. Until Mortal Kombat 11, we’d only seen two of them—Shinnok and Cetrion, who are brother and sister.
So the question remains, who is the stronger Elder God between the two?
Shinnok and Cetrion are both equally powerful. Shinnok, God of death and corruption, and Cetrion, Goddess of life and virtue, are Titaness Kronika’s children and two opposite parts of equilibrium that balance the universe.
In Mortal Kombat 11, we’re introduced to a new character called Kronika. She is a Titaness, the keeper of time, and the architect of the universe’s destiny. She is also a higher being above the Elder Gods.
In the prologue of MK11, when Shinnok returns, Raiden decapitates his head and kills him forever with no chance of a return. Kronika believes that Raiden has caused an imbalance in the universe. She then decides to restore it by manipulating time and bringing back Shinnok.
To do so, she kills all the Elder Gods, sparing Cetrion for two reasons. Not only is she Kronika’s daughter, but also the counterpart of Shinnok, and thus is very much necessary to restore balance. Cetrion, who believes in abiding by her mother’s will, betrays the other Elder Gods.
Thus, Shinnok and Cetrion are equally strong and powerful, but their mother, Kronika, the Titaness, is the strongest character in Mortal Kombat.
1. What Happens at the End of Mortal Kombat 11?
Mortal Kombat 11 has three different endings that are primarily left to the users’ choice.
I. Ending One: The Best Ending
If Liu Kang defeats Kronika in all the rounds without losing even once, then Liu Kang takes the mantle of the protector of Earth realm, and Raiden becomes a mortal. Liu Kang, then with Kitana by his side, reshapes the timeline to give the universe the best possible future.
However, Kitana cautions Liu that even if they manipulate time, they don’t know if the mortals will have the same qualities. This means we know it’s a happy ending for now, at least until the creators come with the next game!
II. Ending Two: The Good Ending
If Liu Kang loses one round with Kronika but wins the fight, then instead of Kitana, Raiden and Liu reshape the universe’s timeline.
This ending has an extension called Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath, which adds more to the story. At the end of this, Liu Kang and Shang Tsung fight each other, and there are two endings based on the outcome.
If Liu Kang wins, he forges the new timeline where he goes back in time to meet the legendary Kung Lao.
If Shang Tsung wins, we see him turn Raiden and Fujin into his minions. The story here ends with Shang Tsung conquering all the realms except the Chaos realm and Order realm.
III. Ending Three: The Bad Ending
If Liu Kang loses to Kronika, she will decapitate Kang’s head and go ahead with her plan of restoring balance to the universe.
With these many endings and variations, it’ll be pretty fascinating to see how the creators pick up the story from this point in Mortal Kombat 12!
